It seems Dancing with the Stars will be missing a key professional dancer when it returns in March.
Three time champion Derek Hough revealed on Monday that he will be absent from the show’s upcoming season. “I’m taking season 12 off,” Derek told PEOPLE.
The reason? Derek, 25, has snagged himself a leading role in the upcoming dance movie Cobu 3D. Derek is set to play a New Orleans street dancer who moves to New York and falls for an Asian drummer (played by Korean pop recording star BoA) in the movie which is scheduled to film in New York and Toronto this spring.
So does this mark the end of Derek on DWTS? That answer is no as he reveals his plans to return in the fall. “I will be making it back to Dancing with the Stars in the fall. I’m just taking a little break and taking this chance to grow and expand a little bit as an artist,” said Derek. “It’s like I told one of the producers on the show – I’ll come back with a whole new set of skills.”
With Derek’s absence, the upcoming season will have a new pro dancing champ, as Derek has won the last two consecutive seasons with Nicole Scherzinger and Jennifer Grey.
I don’t know if I’ll watch now that Derek is not in the show – he and Julianne were the main reasons I watched. Get Heather Locklear to dance with Derek when he returns
Why give him the ringer every year? How far would he get with someone like Niecy Nash or the Gosselin mess?

He is SO cute. I don’t watch the show though lol.
I for one am tired of Derek Hough always getting the best dancer of the group year after year. It will be nice to get a fresh face and finally a new winner on there. I won’t miss him at all.
LOL @ 5 – I like Derek, but you are right both he and his sister do get the best celebs with very good dancing abilities…….which explains why they both have dominated (like you said) the show……If I am not mistaken, they both have won like three times each????/

Totally agree with Kifferslady in how Derek Hough ALWAYS gets the best dancer to work with. I say good riddance to his mug face on my tv.
he is my favorite and brings soooo much to this show, I doubt I will watch it this season. I am so disapointed,
oh stop talking about Derek Hough he can’t help it if he’s popular and a very excellent dancer.
