Following this week’s outburst on Dancing With The Stars over perceived judges favoritism, Maksim Chmerkovskiy is continuing to defend his actions and refusing to apologize! He is also slamming certain competitors – and he is not holding back!
Speaking out on Good Morning America, Maks is still seething over the unfair critique he believes he and partner his partner Hope Solo received at the hands of judges Len Goodman and Carrie Ann Inaba. “I definitely have nothing to apologize for I have nothing to apologize for to Len, and certainly not to Carrie Ann. She can make all the faces she wants.”
“I don’t regret anything. That’s why I think I’m a bit misunderstood in this situation,” he explained, making it clear he has no intention of trying to make his way back into the judges’ good graces. “Everyone is waiting for me to bow my head, take a knee and say I’m sorry and plea for forgiveness. I have nothing to apologize for.”
He is also furious about how the judges speak to the contestants during those critiques! “Why is it that the judges are allowed to compare us to animals and say stuff they think is funny when it’s nothing constructive at all and we can’t say that they’re wrong, basically?” Maksim questioned, referring to comments from judge, Bruno Tonioli comparing Chaz Bono to a “little penguin”.
As for his comment to the judges calling DWTS “my show”, Maksim agrees he misspoke, describing: “When I got on this show six years ago I treated it as a dance competition and everyone here tried really hard to change my mind and say ‘Look Maks, it’s a show, there are other elements to it,’ so I embraced it. But one thing I’m not going to embrace is pointed fingers and disrespectful remarks.”
“I love the show. I love the fans. I love every aspect of it and that was the whole idea behind what came out wrong with “my show,” he explained. And he also loves his partner! “One thing I don’t want to do is to have Hope have any negative vibe out of this,” he emphasized, further leading to speculation that the two may be more than dance partners! “She’s truly our star and she’s been doing an amazing job.”
Well, Maks may love Hope and the fans, but there’s someone else he certainly doesn’t love besides the judges – competitor Derek Hough! Maks describes Derek as looking out for number one and calls him “very supportive of his personal career on the show,” referring to Derek’s comments agreeing with the judges’ critiques of Hope’s performance this week.
And he is making it clear Derek is successful because he gets all the partners with experience! “With all due respect, if I had Nicole Scherzinger, followed by Jennifer Grey, followed by Ricki Lake, I probably wouldn’t be very upset with the judges either!”
I’m sure we haven’t heard the last of this issue. I’ll be tuning in next week to see what happens! So the question is -
DO YOU THINK MAKS OWES THE JUDGES AN APOLOGY FOR HIS OUTBUST? WAS HE OUT OF LINE WITH HIS COMMENTS ABOUT DEREK? DO YOU THINK HIS RECENT BEHAVIOR WILL NEGATIVELY AFFECT HIS STANDING ON THE SHOW?

Louis van Amstel agreed on GMA this morning, with Maks’ point of view this morning regarding Derek and the partners he’s had. Said Derek has NEVER been criticized the way others have. They’re both right. It is so obvious that Derek is the fair-haired boy on that show.
Go MAKS!!!!
No Maks should not apologize , the judges go way over the top on their judging. And yes Derek is the fair haired boy. Always good partners, and Chaz was right when Kristie Alley was on they never said one this about her weight. And does Carrie think that this is her show? She’s like some scolding mother the way she treats the dancers and the celebs.
I agree with Maks – then can critique without name calling.
Cannot stand the egomaniacal Maks.
I agree that the judges have their favorites and are a little harsh with their non-dance comments. But Maks hasn’t been shafted with partners, who have included Mel B, Erin Andrews, Brandi and Kirstie Alley. He has done a great job with them! If anything, the voters failed Maks, no the judges (especially in the case of Brandi).
I wonder what Tony D says about all this. He’s had the same outcome as Maks (great partners with the undesired outcome).
So proud to see that Maks is standing by his convictions. Those judges need to go.
I think maks is bitter. I agree that maks had good partners in the past. Hope was predicted to be a frontrunner. I do think Jennifer Grey and Ricki Lake only agreed to so the show if Derek was their partner. But Len is a judge on a show where you are judged. You don’t have to like what he says but you shouldn’t disresepct him by telling him to retire.
He’s just mad he has yet to win, must hurt his ego.
I think the judges can judge however they want, BUT I also think the pros have a right to their rebuttal, opinion, and point of view. They also know dancing. Love the show. You know there are always a certain number there for comic relief, but in the end I want the best dancer to win. Well maybe I want the most improved best dancer.
If Maks was as great of a teacher and dancer, he could have made some of his past partners winners, but the fact is, he turns people off with his attitude, so he fails to get votes. In the end, the judges have less to do with the process, it is the public who votes, and they don’t like him. Pretty easy to see.
Bottom line – it is a reality show with a dance competion combined.. When Maks continues to speak out and has to rely on the American public to vote his “celebrity” through, doesn’t he think that his actions have consequences?? He is extremely talented but his attitude and actions diminish all he has accomplished since he came to America. Then calling out his fellow professionals and complaining….what is that all about? If he so unhappy with the judges, his fellow dancers and the show as a whole – why does Maks come back year after year…?
Maks is an ego maniac. He’s a big show off and I can’t stand him. Derrick is a better dancer and choeographer (sp?). If Maks doesn’t like it, he can quit. No one will miss him, but people missed Derrick when he took a break. The show was not as good without him. Glad he’s back. His routines are ten times better than Maks’. That’s why he wins. Maks is not as good as he thinks he is. I think when he said it’s his show, it really showed how egotistical he is. Good-bye Maks.
SHE CANNOT DANCE!!!!! MAYBE BEDDING HER ALSO.
I agree with Maks – the judges judge and critique unfairly. HOWEVER even his HORRIBLE partner has received way better scores than she should have. If your team benefits from their unfairness how can you turn around & get upset about it when they finally give her the scores she actually deserves? This show IS about entertainment but I do think that the judges should score more fairly. J.R. has done just as well if not better than Ricki several weeks yet still the judges criticized him based heavily on technicality while Ricki got away with her missteps. The judges have consistently been unfair since season 1. It’s difficult for the contestants and the professionals to know what to go for – technicality or personality & flash. Some people try for the personality & get shot down…others (like Carson Kressley this season) get points for it.
Oh & another thing…I get where Maks was coming from & I agree with him. I also really don’t think he meant it as it’s HIS show in an egomaniacal way…it just came out wrong. BUT I do take issue with the fact that he speaks to his partners VERY rudely & disrespectfully then takes offense when the judges do it. In the clips before he performs with Hope he is almost always saying something mean to her. I think that both Maks AND the judges need to have some more respect for the “celebrity” contestants. I felt SO bad for Chaz, too. You could see how much Bruno’s comments hurt his feelings. And cut to Bruno’s face after we saw Chaz talking about it on screen and he’s making faces and shaking his head. Totally rude & mean. APOLOGIZE JERK!
He has a right to his opinion. That was no “slam” of Derek either.
Sounds like the war of words has begun. Next season should be interesting…….will Maks be back or will he not? He certainly has a point about Derrick Hough though, always being partnered with the best dancers in the group.
What boggles me is that so many people think their opinions are the only ones that matter. If you don’t believe in Christmas I shouldn’t have the right to celebrate it because you don’t like it (works in reverse too). Chaz Bono is living his life the way he sees fit. What differene does it make to anyone who is not in his immediate life? Absolutley nothing but some people constantly have to correct, inform, etc in order to feel relevant otherwise they might not have anything beneficial or entertaining to say. I don’t disagree that I think Chasity has emotional issues aside from just feeling like a man trapped in woman’s body however Chaz wants to be called Mister~no skin off my back.
Ok so I sort of agree. The judges can be too harsh and disrespectful at times but the fact of the matter is Hope sucks ass. She has no rythym and hasn’t had a good dance all season. I’m surprised Kristin’s gone and she’s still there. Besides, Maks is an asshole and he is extremely disrespectful himself. He’s just pissed because he got a sucky partner. When he had Mel B he didn’t complain. Also, he left the show a few years ago and had to come back because he didn’t succeed on his own. I think that’s another reason he’s pissed.
I stopped watching the first season, I realize it wasn’t a dance competition it was a popularity contest. Some of the very worst dancer keep advancing.
Although I agree with Maks that the Judges can be unnecessarily rude instead of offering constructive criticism. Yet, I can’t take Maks overblown ego. He is not as good as he thinks he is – his idea of good dancing seems to be taking his shirt off (which Len calls him out on it each time). I sorta kinda agree with the inference of Derek Hough regarded as the fair-hair prince darling of the series. I do think Derek should get all the ‘non-dancers’ with the “two left feet” instead of those who have a background in dance. Yet, Maks looks like a bad sport throwing Derek under the bus.
I have to keep saying – Hope is NOT a good dancer and I can’t believe the high marks she has been given…no rhythm. If folks are gonna criticism Chaz for his weight and gender identity, folks seem to OVERLOOK how much bigger Maks breast are in comparison’s to Hope’s?
Bring back Kate Gosselin and pair her with Maks. Then he’d really have something to bitch about.
Maks has a HUGE ego and I can’t stand him or his behavior.
Derek is the boy wonder is always given the better dance partner but Maks had no right to go all ape shit on Len.
Deport Maks.
Maks is spot on.
there may be things happening behind the scenes we are unaware of… but what are we all talking about tody, mak’s outburst. he may be a lot of things but he makes the show lively.
after reading comments here i agree maks might not be the dancer he thinks he is. without a doubt, dereck is a great dancer.
it didn’t help hope wearing that awful outfit.
CANNOT stand Maks’ EGO! Derek is just a better dancer and much better coach than Maks. We don’t see him losing it or swearing at the stars. Chaz was horrible since week 1 and but for his mother would NEVER have been asked to appear on DWTS
I started FF-ing through the judges’ comments after a season or two. It was basically them just making fun of non-professional dancers. I don’t find people being made fun of entertaining.
@#6Diana…
The difference between Derek partners Nicole Scherzinger, Jennifer Grey, and Ricki Lake all of them had previous dance experience.
But Maks partners Mel B, Erin Andrews, Brandi and Kirstie Alley did not have dance experience, although Brandy and Mel are recording artist, their experience pale in comparison to Derek’s. So the difference between the two is that Derek’s partners were much more experience.
However, I do like the both, but, you would have to be blind not to notice that Derek treatment is far better than Maks. Maks speaks his mind and let them know.
Trust, most of the professional male dancers DO NOT like Carrie Ann…talk to Tony, Louie and even Lacey. Carrie Ann is much harder on the female celebrities than the men. I have been watching since day one and Carrie Ann has not change when scoring the women celebrities. Then Carrie Ann gets upset when one of the professional dancers calls her on it.
TEAM MAKS!!
Maks is an ego-maniac. Maks is HOT, HOT, HOT!!! Maks is funny. Maks is opinionated. Maks is interesting. Maks makes the show. If you look close enough, you can see that he’s a real sweetheart. I wouldn’t change a thing about him. Derrick Hough is by far the best choreographer on the show AND he is easy on the eyes and has personality. There’s room at the top for both Maks & Derrick. Hope is a HORRIBLE dancer, not sexy, has a bad attitude, and has a sense of entitlement. The only reason she’s lasted as long as she has is women who love Maks keep voting to keep MAKS on, not Hope. I hope that Maks & Derrick kiss and make up. People like them both, equally. One is a yummy boy/man, and the other is a sex God.
I want to see Maks physically SLAM Derrick on the ground.

EXACTLY!! Perfectly put.
I agree with Maks. The same pros keep winning. Jennifer Grey was a professional dancer….remember Dirty Dancing?
#34 – Jennifer Grey is an actress, not a dancer. “Dirty Dancing” has always been overrated in the dancing department, as far as I’m concerned. ANY ONE of us on this blog could do what Jennifer Grey did in that movie. Patrick Swayze was a professsional dancer before becoming an actor.
@35PM- both of your posts are spot on! Jennifer Grey was/is not a dancer, she was in a dancing movie over 20 years ago, where Patrick Swayze carried the dancing scenes. Same goes for Ricki Lake. Not sure the small bit of line dancing (at 200+ pounds) she did qualifies as “dancing”. Nicole Scherzinger’s experience was EXACTLY the same as Mel B’s & Brandi’s. So Maks can stop his crying. He better be thankful for the judges treatment that he is bitching about because Hope deserved to be gone looooong ago- definitely before Chynna & Kristin. Hope’s athleticism should lend to her dancing, I really thought they would be leading the pack. Boy was I wrong.
Maks is right. The judges can be cruel with their comments. I still haven’t forgiven Bruno for the horrible comments he made to Michael Bolton, and he refused to apologize. Bruno is definitely the ego maniac not Maks. The judges can critique without being cruel.
Maks’ delivery is wrong, but what he (and Louis VA) are ultimately saying is right. If all the pros started out with an even playing field (that is, every celeb partner had the same level of dance experience) the show would be more “fair.” But they don’t & that would probably be impossible to do.
However, it is obvious that Derek (the “favorite”) always gets the celeb who has BY FAR more dance experience than the other celebs. I mean: Jennifer Grey & Nicole S. were practically a professional dancer and Ricki Lake isn’t that far behind them (she’s just a little out of shape with it, whereas they weren’t, but she definitely has dance experience too). Now, given that, I would think the judges would be HARDER on the celebs with more dance experience, but no, the judges are the exact opposite — falling all over themselves for Derek’s partners and really beating up the celebs with no dance experience who are “improving.” That’s wrong, IMO.
My favs are the celebs who have little to no dance experience who improve the most & not the ones like Jennifer Grey who were already good dancers to start with. But, ultimately, it is just an entertaining dance show that I don’t get too worked up over.
PS — those saying Jennifer Grey was not a dancer are wrong. While it is true she never made her living as a professional dancer, her mother was a professional dancer & her father was a famous Broadway dancer & actor. She got the SAME dance training growing up just like a professional dancer would — and that is what people are saying when they say she was already a dancer — because she has the training.
No one has the right to be mean and the judges can be down right cruel. It is not right to break someone’s spirit. You can critique and give feedback without being mean. This is about helping non-professional dancers improve.
I saw Michael Bolton on one of the talk shows recently and he is still angry about Bruno’s negative comments about him and said that he wants an apology. Although Bruno was harsh, Michael needs to get a grip and move on. It’s a friggin’ entertainment show AND Bruno was right. . .he sucked!
Does Maks listen to himself? Its a show. the judges are doing the same thing he is — drumming up the drama for the sake of attention. I’m thinking contracts are currently under review.
It’s takes more than the judges to win this competition. Maks needs to think about why the voters are not giving him the win. I’m sure he and his fans can make up lots of excuses for that too, but bottom line Derek has won the most mirrored balls and the most popular pro as measured by the Design a Dance competition.
Maks is just jealous of Derrek!
Maks must be mad at all the voters who do not play fair either since they do not vote for him to win.
I do the same thing as the judges – Maks, quit showing off and teach your partner, quit demeaning your partner, put your shirt back on because it has nothing to do with the dance and shut your mouth and do your job. – this show is not about you..
many of the people defending Maks are obviously clueless. Maks and Derek are friends and Derek is obviously the more mature one since he would not slam Maks for what he said. Maks’s has had partners who had an equal chance of winning’ and if you say having some dance experience is unfair then having a partner who is a pretty big star (Kirsti Alley) is just as unfair since it is 50% fan vote. I truly believe the producers have given Maks partners they thought he could win with. He sounded just plain jealous of Derek, Derek gets some harsh criticisim sometimes too from the judges. I agree that the judges go too far sometimes but it is a show for entertainment, and Maks has to know that Hope was not a good dancer.
