The busiest man in reality television, and our lord and savior, Andy Cohen, has evolved from a behind the scenes player and “that dude who hosted the reunion show” to a full-fledged celeb in his own right, and is poised to become even more well-known now that his quirky talk show Watch What Happens Live is now on a whole five nights a week.
There’s no doubt Andy played a huge role in Bravo’s transformation from obscure basic cable network to one of the nation’s main suppliers of rich people drama and D-listers. While he’ll be putting in much more time on-camera these days that doesn’t mean he’ll be abandoning his role as Executive Producer, telling the Hollywood Reporter that he’ll “remain in charge of all development and talent” (his use of the word talent makes me think of Andy as a Barbizon modeling agent!) and will remain an executive producer of Top Chefand all iterations of Real Housewives.
While he admits that this will remove “twenty something” odd shows from his workload, he is still very involved in a few projects featuring stars Bravo basically created including Jeff LewisandBethenny Frankel: “Jeff Lewis has an incredible new show coming on, Interior Therapy, we’re in post on that show, I can’t imagine stopping watching rough cuts of that show. I’m very invested in it and I want it to be right. I just got two new episodes of Bethenny Frankel’s new show today, I’m seven in already, and I probably want to finish that season out. So, there’s a lot of work that I feel I will probably continue doing.”
Given the success of the shows Andy has had his hand in, we doubt his bosses at Bravo would want him to stop producing shows, either. His influence can definitely be felt in other shows, especially with his crown jewels — Real Housewives and Top Chef; he admits to THR that there are “at least 25 Housewives rip off shows right now.”
Speaking of the Housewives, in a separate interview with Wetpaint, Andy lets Jill Zarinfinally score a point in the ongoing media war that is her existence by giving her credit for finding Bethenny and Ramona Singer onReal Housewives of New York, saying “Jill helped us cast Bethenny and Ramona. She absolutely did.”
Andy, however, makes it clear that he doesn’t believe Jill deserves a commission for that. If you recall, Jill revealed last week that she wanted a finder’s fee for discovering Bethenny. “I don’t get a commission for it,” said Andy. “She’s done very well from the show, so that’s her commission. But she did [help cast them]. She absolutely can take credit for finding Bethenny and Ramona.”
He also stands by his decision to let Jill go, along with her co-stars Alex McCordand Kelly Bensimon, claiming, as Jill has probably said to her daughter hundreds of times, that its for the show’s own good: “And I just think, whether the ratings are down this season or up, for the long-term health of the New York Housewives, we did the right thing.”
TELL US: ARE YOU ENJOYING THE DAILY EDITIONS OF WATCH WHAT HAPPENS? WHAT WOULD YOU SAY ARE THE HOUSEWIVES RIP-OFF SHOWS? DO YOU THINK JILL ZARIN DESERVES COMMISSION FOR FINDING BETHENNY AND RAMONA? IS ANDY COHEN YOUR LORD AND SAVIOR?
Oh Bethenny Frankel, your hour long product promotion otherwise known as Bethenny Ever After is soon to return to us and I would say I’ve missed you but you’ve hardly been out of the spotlight for a moment this year!
The most notorious Housewife to ever grace the screens of Bravo; known as much for her wit, meltdowns and domesticity as she is for her cocktails and everything else Skinnygirl — including her endlessly dwindling waistline — spoke during the Bravo press tour panel (covered by E!) about appearing on reality TV, Russell Armstrong‘s suicide and how the drama on Housewives came to a fever pitch.
When asked if the network that made her famous had crossed the line in choosing to air Russell’s storyline after his tragic passing, Bethenny did not speak about the allegations of abuse surrounding him but admits that things have definitely changed since she initially signed onto Real Housewives of New York. She believes the shows are now attracting “more dramatic women” all angling to “be more dramatic than the next.” I totally agree with Bethenny on that one and it was a thoughtful way to dodge the question on whether or not she sees Taylor Armstrong‘s storyline as credible.
“When I came on the show, it was called Manhattan Moms. Real Housewives wasn’t even a franchise. There was one city,” Bethenny says of the early days. “We were all very new to it and we didn’t even know what it was. It was very fresh.”
“Now, people who sign on to do reality shows, they have a preconceived notion. They’ve seen it already and some people probably show a more dramatic side of their lives and are more dramatic because they want to up the ante. Certainly on Bravo the shows are real. It’s really happening.”
Luckily, the drama on-screen has prepared her for the drama in her personal life as she faced a plethora of scandals and allegations in 2011, along with some incredible successes and much happiness. “I’d say I’m definitely a survivor because of [my background],” Bethenny shares.
While she concedes that the negative media attention has been “challenging,” she doesn’t feel the need to explain herself! “There was a period when I felt that I really had to react and explain and that period has passed. A lot of that gets addressed on the show.”
In season three of her semi-popular reality show, viewers will continue to see Bethenny confronting many challenging aspects of her life. “This season is about working through it, whether it’s in your relationship or in your business,” she reveals.
“The minute that I sold part of my business, it was like someone was waiting at my door to hit me with a baseball bat in the back of the head. I do tend to thrive when I need to survive, when I’m up against adversity.”
And with the new season airing next month Bravo has just released the first preview, which features a clip of lost at sea-gate as well as showcasing some of the struggles Bethenny and husband Jason Hoppy face in their second year of marriage as they juggle parenthood with finding time for each other. You can view the video below!

Hi RT readers! Introducing our newest writer Maria Diaz to you all today! Some of you might be familiar with Maria as she has been blogging about Bravo shows for a while now. You will be able to read more about Maria tomorrow when we publish her bio! Please give her a great RT welcome! Thanks – RT
Our long national nightmare may be coming to an end; Us Weekly reports this weekend that Bethenny Ever After, former housewife and current Skinnygirl mogul Bethenny Frankel‘s hit reality show, will be coming to an end after its third season premieres on February 20.
Before you put your monogrammed tinfoil hats on and blame this on Jill Zarin, do not fear: the source tells Us Weekly that this was a decision Bethenny came to on her own, wanting to end the show on a “high note” and instead she “is going to concentrate on her many business ventures.”
“The door is open for other projects with Bravo,” the source adds. “But as far as Bethenny Ever After goes, she feels that ending the show on a high note and ending it after this season would be best for her family. She doesn’t want her [20-month-old] daughter [Bryn] to grow up on TV.”
This was a year of almost endless bad press for Bethenny, who for a while seemed virtually untouchable, as viewers watched her go from the sad singleton begging her detached boyfriend to move in with her on Real Housewives of New York City’sfirst season, to happily married, with a baby and a fat bank account after she successfully sold her line of Skinnygirl cocktails to Jim Beam for a highly disputed amount of money. However, then came some lawsuits, an accusation that she faked being lost at sea for her reality show and lastly her talk show got dropped.
In any case, if there’s one thing Bethenny is good at it’s spinning just about anything in her favor (it’s why they pay her the big bucks!) and she did just that at this weekend’s Television Critics Association press junket (this is when the networks roll out previews of all the new shows, along with forcing the actors and other stars to talk to an army of members of the media).
She says all the stories are just making her stronger and it’s a testament to just how popular she is, telling E! Online: “I’m also a little bit flattered because it means I must’ve really made something out of myself, because there are that many that that want to tear me down. A lot of people want to tear me down, and if I were them, I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for that to happen.”
Bethenny also spoke out about her former BFF Jill Zarin. When asked if she had any advice for the now fired Jill, she stated, “Jill Zarin is definitely a survivor. She is definitely well-to-do and I don’t think she’s worried about finding a job.”
Bethenny doesn’t end there going on to give Jill a not so subtle diss. “She was on the show for years, and in many of the cities people are only on for one or two seasons,” Bethenny explains. “It just happens that they make it a little fresher. I’m sure she’ll find exactly what she’s looking for. It probably just stings a little bit. It’s a little bit difficult. She has her own way of dealing with it. I’m sure it’s difficult for her a little bit to watch what’s going on with me. Maybe if I were in her position, that’d be difficult for me, too. She handles it the way she knows how.”
As for what we can expect on the third and reportedly final season of her reality show, Bethenny states we will get to see some marital issues between her and hubby Jason Hoppy. Though she says her marriage has “amazing ups,” it also has struggles: “I just turned 41, and I unintentionally crammed everything in,” said Bethenny. “I got pregnant, I got married, I sold part of my business, and now we’re settling into what married life really is.”
Bethenny notes that she’s still “in therapy,” and despite problems between Jason and herself, she did not request that the cameras be turned off. “We’re going there,” she added.
Regarding her future on Bravo, they are naturally tight-lipped about whether or not the third season of BEA will be her last (I’d like to suggest a follow-up entitled Everybody Hates Bethenny, where she will just deal with all her haters) and the network tells Us Weekly that: “They haven’t even finished shooting this season so no decision has been made about another one yet.”
Whatever the decision is, love her or hate her, no doubt folks will be watching Bethenny, whether to laugh, cry or just speculate on how much plastic surgery she’s truly had done.

TELL US – THOUGHTS ON BETHENNY CHOOSING TO END HER SHOW? SMART? ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT SEASON 3? THOUGHTS ON HER COMMENTS ABOUT JILL & HER MARRIAGE?
I think it’s fair to say that Jill Zarin, former Real Housewives of New York cast member, is having a hard time letting go. Since she was abruptly fired last year Jill has given countless interviews about leaving the show and how much she loves being away from the cameras. And we’re not believing it for a second!
In the latest, Jill did a sit-down with The Hollywood Reporter and gave an explosive testimonial about what it’s really like to be a part of Reality TV and offered up some pretty shocking behind the scenes details about Bravo and the show. Now that she’s not under contract she has nothing to lose and good — because I love a juicy story!
When asked why she was let go from the cast Jill explains she still has no idea and swears that Bravo was stringing her and fellow fired Housewives along before finally issuing the pink slip.
“First off, I like to say I was fired because I’m not embarrassed about it. I didn’t do anything wrong, so I really don’t know why they fired us and kept the other girls.”
“We were told that they wanted to begin season five filming over Labor Day, so the other ladies and I were preparing story lines, basically putting our lives on hold until shooting. In June, it wasn’t even a question if they were inviting me back. By August, conversations started to change. They were hesitant to commit and delayed the announcement. Then I got a call the Wednesday after Labor Day that Bravo decided to bring back LuAnn [de Lesseps], Sonja [Morgan]and Ramona [Singer], but the rest would not be decided until the end of the week.”
“I’m smart enough to know that they were putting out contracts to new girls, and whether they signed would determine our fate. So, at 5 p.m. on a Saturday night I get a phone call from my producer, and she told me that Bravo had made the decision to let the four of us go.”
“I was upset because I was told to put my life on hold,” Jill explains. “But I didn’t argue, I wasn’t going to try to sell anyone. I said, ” ‘OK. Thank you for everything you’ve done for me.’ ”
“Andy Cohencalled shortly after, which I’m sure was a difficult thing to do. He gave me the respect I deserved considering I committed four years of my life to the show. He said they wanted the series to go in a different direction and that last season ended very dark — which I find ironic because they could have controlled that. I filmed many happy scenes that the network canned.”
Very interesting as fans of RHONY and others in the Housewives franchise have been begging for the shows to return to their original intent of happy and fun-loving docu-dramas about wealthy women and their lives. Is Bravo really deciding not to air that kind of footage in lieu of footage with high drama content?
Jill continues by explaining that Bravo’s decision to let her go had absolutely nothing to do with reports that she requested a higher salary to continue filming. “First of all, we were finally making a decent amount of money last season. That was never a concern,” Jill states, saying it is “absolutely untrue” that salary disputes occurred.
“They’re getting a lot of money now, so that’s another thing I’m disappointed about. I didn’t get to make the money I feel I deserved. I didn’t just help make the show popular; I cast it,” Jill shockingly reveals.
Jill goes onto claim that she was responsible for bringing in Bethenny Frankel (her then close friend), which is common knowledge and possibly alleges that Bravo should have paid her a finders fee of sorts. “I brought in Bethenny, and I don’t get a percentage of anything she spins off. The first, second and third season salary pretty much added up to the fourth season. I worked really hard.”
This leads me to wonder if other Housewives receive percentages of earnings as rewards for adding to the casts. I doubt this very much, but it is a possibility. Bravo has readily admitted that Kyle Richards was the first woman cast to Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and she introduced the other women to producers and assembled the majority of women that were eventually hired — even her season one nemesis Camille Grammer.
When asked if the show is scripted Jill describes that, of course, editing plays a huge part in what viewers see. “It’s a TV show, not a documentary. It’s not scripted, but it is edited. It doesn’t mean we didn’t live it, it just means they focus on a particular storyline.”
Also, Jill point blank accuses Bravo of manipulating scenes and circumstances to build plot lines! “With New Jersey, they were brilliant to film season four before season three aired. They had to. Bravo had no delusions that they set up Teresa [Giudice]by hiring her sister-in-law and cousin without letting her know. It’s understandable Teresa would be upset. The show couldn’t film now: Teresa and Caroline [Manzo]won’t even be in the same room, and Jacqueline [Laurita] quit. As a cast, they’re kaput.”
As for what she is up to now that she is done with Housewives, Jill is not leaving television in the dust as she is working to secure other deals in the medium. “My husband and I were recently in L.A. for meetings about a potential television opportunity. And now I finally have the freedom to do that.”
Jill insists that the NBC-owned Bravo kept their Housewives under close watch and did not allow them to branch out into other networks — even to promote products which the network takes a percentage of. “That’s the one thing Bravo would never give us: the ability to appear elsewhere. Before, I could never appear on another network. We couldn’t even do Good Morning America, we had to do Today, even if it was to promote our brands. They were very controlling,” Jill reveals.
“In hindsight, it would have been smarter for them to do a development deal with me. I would have been stupid enough to let them build my ego and give me a deal for no money that would lock me to the network.”
Even though Jill has scathing things to say about the network that paid her bills for four years she is still happy she did the show. “The show made women in their 40s and 50s relevant again. Hollywood is all about young girls, and this was an opportunity that didn’t require us to be young and beautiful. It’s real women.” Well, somewhat…
“But I won’t miss the lying and the fighting,” Jill discloses. “And I won’t miss the stress over clothes. I had to have 80 outfits for the season, and I would totally stress over that.”
Wow pretty good stuff! I have to say being part of the Housewives franchise sounds incredibly stressful and complicated and I’d rather be a viewer than a participant!
Moving on, current RHONY cast member Pinot Singer spent her holidays on the island of St. Martin with her husband Mario and daughter Avery. Photos of the family vacation are below! They look happy and relaxed and I’m jealous! I wonder if she toted along any Ramona Singer Pinot Grigio?

THOUGHTS ON JILL’S EXPLOSIVE INFORMATION ABOUT BRAVO AND RHONY? ARE YOU SURPRISED THAT BRAVO IS SO CONTROLLING OF IT’S HOUSEWIVES?

Despite the lawsuits, controversies and negative media attention from the last year, reality mogul Bethenny Frankel has been named to The Hollywood Reporter’s Women in Entertainment 2011: Power 100 list. Bethenny landed at spot number 100, but hey it’s better than nothing, right?
“Not too long ago, I didn’t have anything at all,” Bethenny recounts to THR. “It’s been abrupt: fame, marriage, baby, success.” As her reality show wraps filming for its third season, Bethenny has no plans of slowing down – she has gag orders to issue and fake dramas to reproduce, y’all! Perhaps the skinnygirl should slow it down as she recently claimed she is so busy she forgets to eat!
“I have a couple things on the fire, probably three or four, including a few project possibilities with Bravo. We’ve been great partners,” she reveals, adding that her first novelSkinny Dipping will be in stores in May 2012.
Despite her talk show not getting picked up, Bethenny is not daunted as she has other development deals in process and even hints that she may make her life story into a movie! “I’ve been approached,” she shares, “but you have to make the right choices. I’m not going to force anything.” Oh sweet lemonaide, that is just too much!
Moving on, the Bethenny Ever After star will stop at nothing to indoctrinate the public with Skinnygirl and force upon us a new product pretty much every day. We’ve been shape weared, and cleansed inside out, and boozed up, and skin cared and snackbar-ed, and now dressed.
For those of you who are tired of the Bravo Home Shopping Network (a.k.a. all of their shows), I have some unfortunate news: Skinnygirl now produces “loungewear.” Oh, yuck yay! Bethenny announced the addition of the newest products on her website. The collection of Skinnygirl garments features yoga pants, a tank and a t-shirt — all emblazoned with her logo, of course! Bethenny advertised that the collection is “perfect to workout in, run errands in, or simply relax in.”
Cafemom reviewed the products and wonders just what kind of woman wants pants with Skinnygirl on the thigh? Their assessment: “Bethenny’s made some awesome products in her day, but this line of clothes misses the mark big time. Because the last thing I want people reading on my clothes is Skinnygirl. I feel like it’s just begging for judgment.”
“Maybe she [Bethenny] wants her clothes to shame us into living the Skinnygirl life,” the reviewer wonders. “But I want my clothes to make me feel good, not guilty, don’t you?” Perhaps the reviewer is biased, but she has a point. If I want clothes that make me feel guilty, I’ll put on my pre-baby leather pants. A photo of the Skinnygirl Loungewear collection is below.

ARE YOU IMPRESSED WITH BETHENNY’S LATEST ACHIEVEMENT? WOULD YOU PURCHASE SKINNYGIRL LOUNGE WEAR? WOULD YOU WATCH A MOVIE ABOUT BETHENNY’S LIFE?
Bethenny Frankel has built a franchise and identity on being the Skinnygirl, but now that the reality star’s life is in turmoil she’s become the TOO Skinnygirl! In today’s not so surprising news the media is questioning Bethenny’s behavior yet again — this time for her gaunt appearance!
Bethenny has always been on the teeny side causing fans to wonder about her weight and lifestyle choices for years — particularly because of some controversial statements regarding losing and maintaining weight in her book Naturally Thin.
Life & Style is reporting that the itty-bitty former Housewife has insiders “concerned” about Bethenny over-doing it, despite claims that she doesn’t do anything “extreme”, and preaches “everything in moderation.” Reality Tea has reported that Bethenny’s weight has dropped severely in recent years.
According to the mag all the upheaval surrounding the brand and image she has worked so hard to cultivate is taking a toll on Bethenny, who an observer notes looked “very thin” at a recent appearance. “Her arms were particularly tiny and frail. She looked almost sickly.” Another eyewitness confirms: “Bethenny is scary skinny in person. She looks emaciated and ill.”
An insider speculates that with Bethenny losing control of her “world” she is taking it out on her diet and has become “obsessive” about portion size and has taken to eating snacks, like small bags of pretzels, instead of a meal or she claims she forgot to eat. “Because I’m so busy, I’m not always hungry,” she confessed to the mag. Bethenny has made no secret of her struggles with her weight, telling anyone who would listen that her mother, Bernadette Birk, sent her to weight-loss camp as a child and that her classmates called her a “whale.”
Additionally, Bethenny is desperate to regain the public’s positive image of her as the “rags to riches, little girl lost who made it big” and is apparently using her weight to gain acceptance from the media and fans.”Bethenny’s in a panic,” an insider reveals. “She’s being attacked left and right for not being real.”
Indeed, Bethenny’s fear of public rejection has left her so worried she’s hired help! “She’s so frantic to improve her image, she’ s hired image consultants to guide her through 2012.” Well, I say she needs it with all the nonsense she’s been embroiled in lately!
While insiders are claiming Bethenny’s life is falling apart the Bethenny Ever After star recently blogged about all she has to be thankful for. After imparting her advice for a healthy and simple holiday meal, Bethenny noted her appreciation for her amazingly patient husband Jason Hoppy, her daughter Bryn and dog Cookie.
“I’m most thankful for my family, and in particular my beautiful baby girl Bryn. She has changed my perspective on life. She has made me more grateful and aware, and has given me different purpose than I had before,” Bethenny wrote.
“I’m grateful for a loving and supportive husband who is a great father to Bryn and a good friend to me,” she added. “I’m especially grateful to Cookie who has been with me through the most difficult and influential stages of my life. She is woman’s best friend and I love her as much as a child.”
I’m glad Bethenny is recognizing all the people who put up with her cray-cray and still love her for the wack-a-doo she sometimes is! Hopefully 2012 will be a more positive year for Team Frankel or I’m predicting she may go the crash and burn route of the Kardashians with too many negatives and too many scandals overshadowing the positives! Best of luck Bethenny in getting things on track and remember: eat some holiday cookies!
THOUGHTS ON THE ARTICLE – DO YOU BELIEVE BETHENNY IS TOO THIN? IS SHE JUST REACTING TO STRESS OR DOES SHE HAVE A PROBLEM? DO YOU THINK 2012 WILL IMPROVE FOR BETHENNY OR ARE FANS TIRING OF HER CONSTANT DRAMA?
Bethenny Frankel’s dreams of breaking into the talk show market may officially be dashed.
The New York Post is reporting that after Bethenny’s talk show “failed to sell into syndication” it has been dropped by its producer Telepictures! “Several stations expressed interest, but there’s probably not room for Bethenny’s show this year,” a source close to Telepictures revealed. Warner Bros (which owns Telepictures) declined to comment on the state of Bethenny’s show.
Unfortunately Bethenny’s blunt, abrasive manner failed to attract the attention of major networks (despite receiving some help from a so-called “nice coach”) and was then overshadowed when several other celebrities with more cred, such as Katie Couric, Steve Harvey, and Anderson Cooper were snapped up for syndication.
As we previously reported, Bethenny was hoping her “advice-based” show would land a spot on NBC, the network that owns Bravo, but was bumped in favor of Survivor host Jeff Probst’s new show, which did well in test markets.
While the Bethenny Ever After star’s show was being test-marketed hoping to gain “traction” (or interest from networks) she found herself in the midst of a series of PR Blunders including a couple of Skinnygirl-related lawsuits and that whole lost-at-sea fiasco where she claimed she was forced to get a “gag order” against the captain of a rescue boat who disputed her version of events. These instances could have been explanations for Bethenny not getting the green-light from networks.
Yet all is not lost for Bethenny as she has supposedly received a few opportunities for other “TV types” now that the syndication deal is over. An insider is reporting she’s received offers from both cable stations and other networks.
Personally, I believe cable is a much better market for the over-the-top Bethenny who may not be able to taper her personality down enough for mainstream markets. I also believe she would do better in a panel-format show like The View.
Bethenny has not commented on the latest bad news – YET!
In other Bethenny news, Skinnygirl is now launching another product no one needs — Skinnygirl Face & Body. Bethenny Tweeted the exciting news: “Proud to announce: Skinnygirl Face & Body gift sets are @Walmart! A perfect holiday gift for Skinnygirls of all ages!”
Yes, just perfect! Named for her “famous” cocktails, fans can choose from a Sangria set or a Margarita set each of which contains a body wash, lotion and a body scrub. A picture is below. Oh, gee – I hope I get one for Christmas.

THOUGHTS ON BETHENNY’S LATEST TALK SHOW DILEMNA? DO YOU THINK SHE SHOULD ATTEMPT ANOTHER TV PROJECT OR SHOULD SHE STICK TO REALITY TV? WOULD YOU TRY HER NEW BODY CARE LINE?
Bethenny Frankel has been the subject of constant controversy as of late; it seems every other day she is embroiled in some sort of issue causing a media tail-spin! Needless to say — it’s been quite a year for diet drink maven and wannabe mogul.
Bethenny has made no secret of her desire to leave reality TV behind in the hopes of landing her own talk show. Recent reports stated Mama Frankel had shot a pilot for her own show, but was having trouble hooking a network even going so far as to hire a coach to soften the abrasive, no-nonsense style that made her famous in the reality world.
The Hollywood Reporter describes that launching a talk show is a precarious situation for a network with all the competition from already established shows, thus they must carefully weigh who will gain the most traction with viewers nationwide. Basically, a show must stay in a holding tank and be demoed across a variety of markets before it is “cleared” in the “three-quarters of the country” needed to garner a launch. Once it gets a “launch” a network will back it and air the show.
“If NBC stations pass on her Warner Bros. Telepictures’ show, the former Real Housewife of New York could find it difficult to get the clearances she needs to launch despite support from Ellen DeGeneres,” THR explains of Bethenny’s predicament.
Well, unfortunately for Bethenny it seems NBC made the decision to go with Jeff’s show instead, while Ricki’s show is headed for the Tribune group of stations that helped launch Anderson Cooper’s now popular talk show. “This shuffle is probably bad news for Frankel who must now struggle to find enough carriage to make a launch likely,” the article alleges. Currently there is no expected launch for Bethenny’s show as she is still waiting to be picked up by major networks.
And there is more bad news for the reality star resulting from continued scrutiny over the contents of her “all natural” Skinnygirl Margarita! The New York Post is reporting an expanded lawsuit from former fans of the product, taking issue with the label’s assertion that the cocktail is concocted using “100 percent blue agave tequila.”
Christopher Rapcinsky and Erin Baker, currently taking action against the brand, have amended their $10M class action lawsuit for having “falsely claimed the drink was ‘all natural’ with ‘no preservatives’.”
Upon further investigation into the tequila used to produce the beverage the duo discovered it was actually “a lower quality and purity tequila by-product called mixto — essentially a mash of tequila and some unknown additives (rarely organic) which may comprise as much as 49 percent of the final mixed liquor.” Blech. All-natural, say what?
The duo’s lawyer, Tom Mullaney stated: “100 percent blue agave is not stuff people mix.” Additionally, he says comparing the mix to pure tequila is like “comparing Thunderbird wine to a fine Chianti. They’re both wine, but very different.” I’ll let you wine connoisseurs argue the veracity of his statement, as I’m an $8 a bottle kind of a girl.
The suit isn’t entirely blaming Bethenny (who is not named as a defendant) for the misconceptions, as it notes the discrepancies began occurring after Beam Global acquired the brand and the label changed at some point to say the drink was made “with premium Blue Agave Tequila,” removing the “’100 percent’ reference,” which the suit claims is “highly misleading.”
“Only time and pretrial discovery will tell what was really in the ‘tequila’ that went into the phony ‘all-natural’ margarita. What is certain is the fact that consumers would not have purchased Skinnygirl Margarita had they known it was manufactured with inferior mix to tequila,” the suit insists.
Beam Global is fighting back calling the suit “frivolous” and defending the label’s claims that the cocktail is made with premium tequila. “We will defend our case vigorously, and we are fully confident we will prevail,” the company’s rebuttal stated.
Bethenny’s reps have declined to comment on this latest attack on her product and she has not confronted the controversy via Twitter, opting instead to promote more products in the Skinnygirl line-up. Perhaps all the drama surrounding Bethenny might have something to do with networks passing on her talk show?
THOUGHTS ON BETHENNY’S LATEST DILEMNAS? ARE YOU SURPRISED HER TALK SHOW HAS NOT BEEN PICKED UP – WOULD YOU WATCH? THOUGHTS ON THE LAWSUIT: FRIVOLOUS OR WITH MERIT?
