Gloria Govan Interview

While the first season of Basketball Wives: L.A. has come to an end, that doesn’t mean that any of the ladies have gone away. Gloria Govan recently sat down with VH1 to discuss the insanity that is Jackie Christie and her concerns about her sister Laura Govan’s reputation.

Gloria also shares her future film aspirations (she can’t be a reality star forever, right? Thankfully) and compares the Los Angeles women with their Miami counterparts. Oddly, she forgets to mention that very few of the ladies (East Coast or West Coast) are actual wives…

Excerpts from the interview are below.

In the final episode, what did you guys do after you all left the restaurant after meeting with Jackie?

We stood outside the restaurant for like ten minutes and were just kinda like “What in the hell?” in the parking lot. We were all confused and they obviously didn’t show everything, but we were like, this girl is crazy. She kept saying “Y’all need to be truthful! Y’all don’t even know what you’re talking about!” But we were like “We made a chart,” we showed up an hour early at the restaurant to make sure we were all on the same page, and when she came in, you know, we were like “Oh my God,” because honestly when we left Hawaii, we were afraid. We thought she was gonna pop out in the parking lot and attack. We were freaked out, seriously. It was to the point where we were asking for security. All of us were like, she’s crazy! And all she kept saying was “Y’all gonna be sorry, you don’t know who you’re messing with, y’all gonna be sorry,” and we were like, “This girl’s got like eight personalities.”

I think Malaysia was the one who joked that she was off her meds, did you actually think that too?

I was always like “Oh, Jackie’s just sensitive, whatever, it’s fine,” but there was that one point where I was like “She needs to be checked out,” dead serious, she needs medical attention. We were actually thinking about looking to get her into a psych ward and get tested.

Was it weird to you that Jackie went from like, den mother who everyone looked up to to the crazy one, and Draya went from the outsider to, you know, someone everyone ended up liking in the end?

Yeah, it was kind of crazy how everyone switched roles. Even Malaysia and I went from not really liking each other to her, you know, finding her walk with God and she really came into her own, and Imani, she didn’t like me either, she was one of the ones who was like “If I don’t like your sister, I might as well not like you” and I was like “Imani, I’m the only one here that you knew, I introduced you to Laura!”

Did you worry at all about [Laura], that her reputation preceded her and she’d get some heat?

Yeah, I definitely thought that I’d have to spend at least the first half defending her, coming from Miami and all those assumptions and that scrutiny. I was prepared for that, but then again, knowing Imani, and Laura having known Jackie, the only two that I was worried about were Malaysia and Draya. I didn’t know them, they didn’t know my sister, that was the only time that I was on edge. But in terms of working with her, it was hilarious. We shot a lot together and we’d always laugh. The crew had to be like “Come back to us, focus up!” It was classic.

What did the rest of your family think of you doing another series after you had such a tumultuous time on the Miami show?

They know I’m a strong person, obviously very hard-headed at times, but I think with my sister on board, they knew we wouldn’t do anything to ruin our family values or our reputations or anything like that. They were way more supportive. And they know I want to get into films, so they were like take this as an opportunity.

How’s that going?

Auditioning has been amazing, I’ve gotten some callbacks, and just the opportunities I’ve gotten through sponsors and appearances have been great. This is a stepping stone, I’m not going to be a reality star forever, so it’s been good.

How different is this cast from Miami?

So different. I think, first of all, we all have kids, so I think for a lot of us, our priorities are different. I think that’s why we filmed so long, we all had other commitments and our priorities were different. And also, we may not all have guys, but a lot of us still have to deal with them to a certain degree because we have kids with them, so I think that comes out in how we approach certain situations. Because we ARE moms, we aren’t going to be throwing water week in and week out. We’ve had our boiling points, obviously, but it wasn’t like a constant occurrence for us because we were like “No, I’m a mom and my kids aren’t going to look at me like I’m stupid.” I think that’s the main thing that distinguishes us from Miami.

So, let me get this straight… Jackie’s a bit off her rocker, the other girls are getting along just peachy, Gloria’s the next Eva Longoria star of stage and screen and the main aspect that separates the L.A. ladies from Miami is that the ladies of Los Angeles acted less “stupid” due to having children? No words.

THOUGHTS ON GLORIA’S INTERVIEW? DO YOU THINK THE MIAMI CAST ACTS WORSE THAN THE LADIES OF L.A.? HOW WOULD YOU COMPARE THE CASTS?

It seems while VH1 was airing the reunion show of Basketball Wives, the real drama was taking place in Twitterville.

Matt Barnes, fiance of cast member Gloria Govan, didn’t appreciate what the ladies had to say about he and his fiance, mostly when they all declared they didn’t know who he was before the show. The led to Matt unleashing a verbal smackdown on the ladies.

Matt posted the following – (Keep in mind FirstLadyEve is Evelyn Lozada, RedCarpet_17 is Jennifer Williams, and Shaunie_O is of course Shaunie O’Neal)

@FirstLadyEve& @RedCarpet_17 yall hoes enjoy ur 5mins of fame & when it runs out make sure u find another athlete/celeb 2 SUCK dry. TRICKS!!!

The ladies however did not take Matt’s twitter abuse laying down. Here’s what they also tweeted to Matt –

(Jennifer) – Do u wanna talk abt the model u smashed in NY then put in a cab while ur fiance was pregnant? Yeah, I didn’t think so CLOWN! @Matt_Barnes22

(Evelyn) @Matt_Barnes22 Guns are out and loaded! Let’s get it going! Tired of ur ass talking shit! Test tube baby!

(Shaunie) RT @MinisterMP: Don’t waste your breath on fools, for they will despise the wisest advice.Prov23:9NLT

This isn’t the first time Matt has unleashed on the ladies via twitter. Gloria, who did not attend the reunion, gave a new interview to VH1 and had some interesting things to say regarding Shaunie and Matt’s twitter attacks. Excerpts are below -

What do you think of the stuff Matt said to the women on the show via Twitter?

I think he has gone back and forth with them. I don’t have a Twitter account that I have used in a long time. I don’t follow them, they don’t follow me so it would’ve been pointless to get involved. Mainly, I told Matt don’t waste his time. They’re just unnecessary. They’re not a factor in our lives, to entertain ignorance belittles you and brings you down to their level. Part of me was proud of him, though. I was kind of excited. I was glad that he stood up to them. He protected me in a sense. I was excited for that, but I also told him it was probably a waste of time.

Are ties completely severed with Shaunie?

I think so. I don’t think I have aimed any of my comments at Shaunie in a negative light. From what I’ve heard, she had tried to say things about me or about Matt or about our relationship in general that just aren’t nice. I just think it’s also very immature. For someone to be grown with five kids, I feel like she should have better things to do with her time.

TELL US: WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THE DRAMA BETWEEN MATT AND THE LADIES?

gloria_govan_interview

In an all new interview with VH1, Basketball Wives star Gloria Govan is speaking out on her experience with being on the hit show.

Gloria speaks out on the drama with Royce, her fiance Matt Barnes stating that he is “disgusted” with the show, and briefly touches on the scandal of her sister, Laura Govan, having an affair with Shaquille O’Neal. Gloria also reveals her wedding is coming up in August and that she will not be returning for a second season.

Excerpts from Gloria’s interview below -

And how do you feel about the show? Do you feel like your portrayal is accurate?

To a certain extent. I didn’t know the women coming into the show, so I think sometimes I may come off a little naive. I may come off as the shy-girl-in-the-background type, which is not my personality at all. I’ve never had a problem telling anybody how I feel. On the show, though, I’m being me, 100 percent real the whole time so there’s no surprises. I haven’t seen any surprises.

What did you think of the fact that Jennifer and Evelyn seem insistent on pushing the point that he’s not as faithful as you seem to think he is?

You have these grown women who have been in the game for so long, and you would think they would say, “Hey listen, Gloria, I’ve been there done that for the past 10 years and here are my stories, here is my advice, take it for what it’s worth and good luck.” Instead they have to be so persistent and try to taint our relationship. I look at it as being bitter and jealous. I’m 10 years younger than most of the cast members on the show, I’m 24-years-old, and I’m in a respectful, loving relationship, I’m getting married in August, I have two beautiful kids and a family who loves me, and a lot of them are missing a majority of those components. It’s natural for them to be envious of what I have.

They’ve gone as far as to suggest that they have, maybe secondhand evidence, that Matt has been unfaithful to you. Do you have any response to that?

No. I think that they’re just very scarred individuals who don’t have anything else better to do than try to create misery. They would be happy if I was where they are now, and that’s unfortunate. If you’re someone who thrives on someone else’s misery and you’re trying to break up a happy home, I just think it’s kind of sad.

What did you think about Matt saying the show “disgusted” him in a recent interview?

Matt is very opinionated. I just asked him to make sure that he pinpoints exactly what disgusts him next time. That’s just such a broad and vague comment that it could be interpreted in any way. It didn’t surprise me, though. Matt has told me several times that he doesn’t like the show. It’s not necessarily about my role, but just how bitter the other women are. Bitter and angry and just jealous. He’s just like, “That’s not a good look, that’s not who you are, that’s not who you represent.” I think he’s more concerned about people thinking that I run in this kind of circle, because I don’t. I can’t say that I was disgusted by the first episode, but you know, I wasn’t really a fan.

Your storyline isn’t exactly drama-free, though. When you talk about Royce you say to fraternize with her would be like sleeping with the enemy.

What I mean by that is Royce is Dwight Howard’s baby mother, and Matt is on the same team as Dwight Howard, so being friends with Royce is not worth messing up Matt’s team camaraderie. If Royce comes over here and we’re all buddy-buddy and Matt’s around, that could really end up messing up Matt and Dwight’s friendship.

Obviously the reason she was so aggressive in the boxing ring is because everyone had sort of informed her of your opinion of her. Did you feel betrayed by everyone at that point?

Not necessarily betrayed, I just think that they realize that I’m not going to conform to their little group, and so I think they try really hard to make me the black sheep or the outsider. Which is fine. I don’t have a problem with that, it was just kind of funny that they try to make it seem like I’m the only one who feels this way. They’re so quick to tell Royce, “Oh, well Gloria said this,” but in turn, they were agreeing with me or it may have been that they started the conversation and I just chimed in a little bit. I just think it was everybody’s opportunity to say, “Now we have a way to turn the tables.”

I’m sure that you don’t want to get into it about your sister’s alleged affair with Shaq, but did that add any level of stress as well? The fact that you were coming in with people already whispering about your family?

No. Like I said, in the show, they already formed their opinions and they’re already friends with Shaunie. And although I’m friends with Shaunie, I can’t say that we talk on the phone or we text each other. We are cordial, but she’s not invited to my wedding. She’s not that type of friend, so it didn’t bother me. You guys have already formed your own opinions, and I’m not here to change that. I’m here to say you’re not going to talk about my sister in front of me and think that that’s OK.

Knowing what you know about the way the show turned out, would you do it all over again?

No. No, no.

Would you participate in a second season?

No.

An all new episode of Basketball Wives airs tonight on VH1.
