On Wednesday night’s episode of American Idol, the theme was “Now and Then,” giving each Idol hopeful the opportunity to perform a song that was popular back in the 60’s and 70’s and one that has been a recent chart topper.

Idol fave, Scotty McCreery managed fantastic performances in both categories, choosing Montgomery Gentry’s “Gone” and Elvis Presley’s “Always on My Mind” which caused an excited Steven Tyler to exclaim that Scotty – the sweetest of country boys – had “danced with the devil!” Good job Scotty – and of course, as long as teenage girls in America have access to phones, Scotty isn’t going anywhere! Despite Scotty’s successes, it was underdog Haley Reinhart who stole the show with a performance of The Animals’ “Houses of the Rising Sun” that resulted in a standing ovation from the judges and Randy Jackson declaring it the best performance of the night.

Thursday night’s results show began with J. Lo debuting an ill-advised gold lame pouf skirt she wore to her prom in 1985 as she walked out on stage and Steven debuting his new autobiography: Walk This Way to Sweet Misery: How Bad Plastic Surgery Ruined My Life. Just kidding! It’s actually called Does the Noise in my Head Bother You?: A Rock ‘n’ Roll Memoir.

With 60 million votes cast determining who would move forward to the final four, Idol decided to drag out the suspense by not revealing which side of the stage featured the safe contestants; Ryan Seacrest asked Haley and James Durbin to stand on one side and Lauren Alaina and Jacob Lusk to stand on the other, with Scotty receiving the last critique from mentor Jimmy Lovine. Since, of course, Scotty was moving forward – even if his performance consisted of yodeling – Ryan unfairly asked him to choose the side of the stage he felt featured the safe contestants. Scotty chose wisely, opting to stand with Haley and James, who as it turned out turned were the other members of the top three, leaving Lauren and Jacob as the bottom two.

In the middle of all this drama of who’s safe, who’s not, we were treated to a performance of Jennifer Lopez’s new song: “On The Floor” featuring Pittbull. I couldn’t even pay attention to the song because I was so distracted by J. Lo’s second unfortunate outfit of the night which featured silver sequined harem pants (oh so terrible) and a fringedyes FRINGED! – sequined, crop-top with Dynasty pouffed sleeves. Oh the nightmare… Isn’t J. Lo supposed to be a fashion icon?

After a rocky performance of Jordin Sparks’ and Chris Brown’s “No Air”, Jacob was eliminated. Jacob has an amazing voice and I am excited to see where his talent will take him. The man who Randy thought had one of the best performances ever on Idol and who Steven Tyler decided had been brought to Idol by “divine intervention” went home with a beautiful and fun performance of “A House Is Not A Home.” Good Luck Jacob!

Next week – the final four! Who do you think will go home next?

Guess that first elimination wasn’t a fluke after all.

A month after being saved by the judges, Casey Abrams was yet again eliminated on American Idol… For good this time. Following his energetic performance of “Hi De Ho” on Wednesday night, the 20-year-old Wilmette, IL native received the fewest number of votes landing him in the bottom three with Scotty McCreery and Jacob Lusk.

“A lot of fans are going to be disappointed with tonight’s result,” said Ryan Seacrest at the beginning of the show and he was right. While this wasn’t a shocking Pia Toscano type elimination, Casey’s ousting was still a bit of a surprise.

“This is what talent looks like,” said Ryan while the judges gave Casey a standing ovation. Casey went on to give an excellent farewell performance, singing “I Cast a Spell on You.”

With Casey’s elimination, five contestants - Jacob, Scotty, Haley Reinhart, James Durbin and Lauren Alaina – live to perform again next Wednesday on Fox at 8/7c. This season’s American Idol winner will be crowned on May 25.

TELL US – THOUGHTS ON CASEY’S ELIMINATION? WHO DO YOU PREDICT WILL WIN THIS SEASON OF AMERICAN IDOL?

American Idol – And so six remain.

On Wednesday night’s episode the Idol contenders had to pick any song from 21st century. Casey “Soft Lips” Abrams clearly stole the show with his rendition of Maroon 5’s “Harder To Breathe.” He also took Jennifer Lopez’s breath away when he kissed her during his performance, giving her the most action she’s had since marrying Marc Anthony. Steven Tyler was so excited by the sexual chemistry between J.Lo and Casey – errrrr, I mean, the performance he used the F** word on live TV! Whoops! We expect that from some more low-brow reality shows (see: Housewives, ANYWHERE), but not family-friendly idol. Scottie McCreery was, of course, safe simply for being the cutest person in the world with the most adorable accent. Who cares if he can sing!

62 Million votes determined that Jacob Lusk’s touching, but sappy rendition of “Dance With My Father” put him as the first member of the bottom three. Also hanging out in the bottom three were Stefano Langone and Haley Reinhart. Haley turned out to be safe after an awesome version of Adele’s “Rolling In The Deep.”

Then Katy Perry assaulted both our ears (with her weird, whiny song E.T.) and our fashion sensibilities by wearing a white satin spandex, caped, sequined jumpsuit. Yes – I just typed the words WHITE SATIN SPANDEX, CAPED, SEQUINED JUMPSUIT to describe an article of clothing. *Shudder*

As for the elimination, Stefano’s long reign in the bottom three ended as the judge’s wild card pick was sent home. Poor Stefano! I know you have great things ahead of you – after all Jennifer Lopez thinks you’re “hot” and she loves you! He very graciously left by singing “Lately”

Next week we are treated to a series of fun and exciting Carol King songs as interpreted by the six finalists!

TELL US – DID THE VOTERS GET IT RIGHT? WHO ARE YOU ROOTING FOR TO WIN THIS SEASON?

It seems the judges’ decision to use their one time save early on this season came back to hunt them.

In what is being called one of the most shocking eliminations in American Idol history, fan favorite Pia Toscano, 22, was sent packing on Thursday night.

After being in the bottom three with Stefano Langone, and Jacob Lusk, host Ryan Seacrest announced Pia had been eliminated from the show.

Everyone, especially the judges, were shocked at Pia’s exit.  “I have no idea what just happened here. I’m shocked, I’m angry…I don’t even know what to say,” said a tearful Jennifer Lopez. “A mistake is one thing, but lack of passion is unforgivable,” said Steven Tyler chiding the home audience for failing to vote for Pia.

“I’m gutted. You’re one of the best singers in this!” added Randy Jackson. Even the twitterverse was up in arms with many fans, celebs and past Idol contestants voicing their disappointment. “I can not believe they just eliminated pia ! ReAlly..???? Long as she walked away with that voice she will be alright !! Just hate to see talent like that go!” tweeted Jennifer Hudson.

Pia remained a trooper as she closed the show with a performance of “I’ll Stand By You,” receiving a standing ovation following her performance. She broke down in tears after the song as her fellow contestants rallied around her.

Pia’s exit makes the fifth consecutive female eliminated from the show this season. None of the men have been eliminated with only two girls remaining in the top eight now, almost guaranteeing a male will win the show.

TELL US – THOUGHTS ON PIA’S ELIMINATION? DID THE JUDGES MAKE AN ERROR IN USING THEIR SAVE TWO WEEKS AGO?

Let the competition begin!

Just like that, we are now one step closer to finding the ultimate American Idol for season 10. Last night, the show narrowed down the 24 finalists to the top 13. The full list - Jacob Lusk, Haley Reinhart, Thia Megia, (back row) Lauren Alaina, Stefano Langone, Naima Adedapo, Karen Rodriguez, Ashthon Jones, James Durbin, Scotty McCreery, Pia Toscano, (front) Paul McDonald and Casey Abrams.

The show began last night with Ryan Seacrest introducing the Top 24 while also announcing that after the cuts are made, the judges will ask some of the eliminated contestants to sing for a wild-card spot. “It’s going to be a tough night for us,” said judge Jennifer Lopez.

Entertainment Tonight also reports that the judges, who were only supposed to pick 2 wildcards, simply couldn’t narrow it down. “They didn’t make a final decision to make it 13 until the end,” said Ryan.

“We saw so many talented kids we didn’t know what we were going to quite do,” Randy Jackson explained. “I’m still thinking about it,” said Jlo. “I’m like, ‘Did we do the right thing? Did we put the right people in?’”

Meanwhile, Jlo, who would have never made it to the Hollywood round had she tried out for the show, is making certain to use the show to restart her stale music career. Her new music video, “On The Floor”, premiered last night while the judges were mulling over the wild card performances. That video is below -

Casey Abrams, the American Idol finalist who was hospitalized last Wednesday will get to stay on the show reports TMZ.

Casey, who was hospitalized after complaining of severe stomach pains was apparently in danger of being sent home due to his illness. The reason? He was very close to missing Friday’s taping of the top 12 males — something all contestants are required to participate in to remain on the show.

Good news came for Casey as he was able to make the Friday tapings after receiving a blood transfusion at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. He is not expected to return to the hospital.

And above is the official photo of the top 24 contestants: Top row (L-R) Kendra Chantelle, Jovani Barreto, Lauren Turner, Casey Abrams, Tatynisa Wilson, James Durbin, Karen Rodriguez, Jacob Lusk, Lauren Alaina, Thia Megia, Scott McCreery, Brett Loewenstern, Pia Toscano and Jordan Dorsey. Bottom row (L-R): Rachel Zevita, Stefano Langone, Paul McDonald, Julie Zorrilla, Tim Halperin, Haley Reinhart, Clint Jun Gamboa, Robbie Rosen, Naima Adedapo and Ashthon Jones.

The next episode of American Idol airs Tuesday at 8/7c on FOX.
