Kenya Moore charity event

NeNe and Gregg Leakes shopping in Soho

Well, that's an hour of my life I won't get back.  NeNe Leakes headed off to NYC this week, ditching a radio interview that was supposed to be about last week's Real Housewives of Atlanta episode featuring Kenya Moore's charity event, so she could spill this "hot tea" on The View instead. So we tuned in.  Mistake.

They start off asking NeNe to weigh in on Mama Joyce and Kandi Burruss and Todd, since they were on the show yesterday.  When asked what she thinks about the drama between the three, she says, "nothing".  When prodded if Mama Joyce should let go and let Kandi make her own mistakes, NeNe will only say "She should let Kandi make her mistakes".

On to the charity event.  Whoopi asks, "So it's a charity event in your honor? When did you find out about this?"  NeNe replies, "I heard through the girls that there was going to be a charity event in my honor. I happen to be a big supporter of Saving Our Daughters, women of domestic abuse and all those things.  I heard about it the night before from Kenya.  I felt like if you're gonna honor someone, you should at least call them up and say "hey, I would like to honor you, are you available on this date?"

I bet Saving Our Daughters is sorry they ever allowed their charity to be the focus of a masquerade benefit held by Kenya Moore on this season's Real Housewives of Atlanta.  The aftermath of the charity event gets messier by the day.  There seems to be no clear answer as to how much was donated and by whom.  And the organization itself has come under scrutiny as it has been touting itself as a 501(c)3 charity when that exempt status was revoked by the IRS last year.

Saving Our Daughters released another statement yesterday to try to explain why they lost their tax exempt status and how they're working to rectify it.  I'd like to note here that they removed their previous statement about the event from their website.

The chairman writes, "Saving Our Daughters’ has been a non-profit since 1997 and received its 501 C-3 in 1998.  Many people are aware that in 2009 the founder of the organization, Curtis Benjamin, youngest daughter was diagnosed with a cancerous brain tumor that required immediate chemotherapy and radiation in Atlanta. During this time, all of Mr. Benjamin’s time and energy was solely dedicated to his daughter and family. After 2 1/2 years of battling this disease, Iliss Marie Benjamin died in 2011, one month before her 13th birthday."

This morning NeNe Leakes blew off a radio interview that she was supposed to give regarding Kenya Moore's charity event and the mess of misinformation that has been flying all over since the episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta aired last week.  We now understand why she blew off Tom Joyner and his morning radio show – she got a better offer!

NeNe shared that she's heading to The View this Friday morning to spill the tea and clear up the rumors out there.  Sherri Shepherd Tweeted, "NeNeLeakes comin by @theviewtv this Friday 2 clear up a few rumors & setting me straight on the drama #RHOA."  NeNe then Tweeted, "Packing my bags headed 2 The View 2 chat it up wit the ladies & my girl @SherriEShepherd Tea Time Tune n Friday morning".

I can't promise this will be the last Real Housewives of Atlanta story for the day, but we're hoping it is!  Barring any new developments, of course.

First up, NeNe Leakes was promoting yesterday that she'd be spilling tea on the Tom Joyner radio show this morning.  That was before all hell broke loose yesterday afternoon, I guess, because Mrs. Leakes was a no show this morning!   She did Tweet today, but not a word about why she decided not to do the interview and spill the tea she was promising.

On to other business.  Kenya Moore took another opportunity to explain her side of what went down leading up to and the night of her charity event.  She slams NeNe for her lies and her behavior, as expected.

If there's one thing we've learned in our time as reality TV fans, it's that there's always more to the story when it comes to Real Housewives drama.  Always.  This situation with Kenya Moore's charity event gets shadier by the day!  Yesterday Kenya, Nene Leakes and the chairman of Saving Our Daughters all shared their side of the story on Kenya's event, where the money went, who was invited, and on and on.

Today we're taking a peek at the nonprofit itself.  Before anyone attempts to claim their donation to Saving Our Daughters on their tax forms this year, they might want to ask their tax advisor to make sure it's deductible!  According to the IRS, Saving our daughters is NOT a 501(c)3 organization, even though they claim this on their website.  The nonprofit had their status revoked in May of last year, for failing to file a form 990 for three consecutive years.

The fallout from Kenya Moore's charity event is getting messier by the minute!

Earlier today Saving Our Daughters released a statement, sharing that they had not received any donations from Kenya's fundraiser masquerade ball – aside from a $500 one for their annual doll drive.  Kenya is firing back tonight with proof ..sort of?

Kenya turned to lovebscott.com to share texts between her and the head of Saving Our Daughters and also to show off some receipt proof of how much she donated and how much spent on the event.  The Real Housewives of Atlanta star coughed up a canceled check for $500 – possibly the check for the toy drive and a few other receipts for some of the costs of the party.  She claims she spent $10,000 on the event when all was said and done.

Update: Saving Our Daughters has removed the statement from their website.

We're sad to hear that Kenya Moore did not donate the money raised at her charity event in NeNe Leakes' honor!  This was confirmed this afternoon by Saving Our Daughters.

The organization released a statement this afternoon. First, they confirm that NeNe is indeed a strong supporter of their charity.  Second, they confirm that they have NOT receive any monies raised in their name at Kenya's event that was shown on last week's episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta

Their statement begins:  "On February 16, 2014, Saving Our Daughters was mentioned on the episode of Real Housewives of Atlanta as being honored with a fundraiser on its behalf.  Our charity was contacted by publicist April Love to get approval and give notice of this upcoming event. Much to our delight, we were indeed honored to be chosen. After all, one of our largest financial contributors, Mrs. NeNe Leakes who has been responsible for contributions in the thousands of dollars throughout the years, is a member of the cast."
