We are days away from finale episode of Southern Charm’s fourth season, but it ain’t over til it’s over. We still have the reunion episode to look forward to, or if it’s juicy enough: multiple reunion episodes. The cast gathered on Tuesday to June 20, 2017, to film the reunion in New York City with Andy Cohen.
Last night’s Southern Charm was extra large and super charged. That’s the motto of Key West, right? It’s a mythical place where feuds are mended, insincere apologies abound, marlin shirts are couture, and dolphins swarm the shore line. Go ahead and plan your vacay–it’s a charming place, indeed!
As the episode begins,Mr. Belvedere Michael is washing Patricia Altshcul’s Bentley,Cameran Eubanks is foregoing a breakfast cocktail, and Craig Conover is teaming up with Gizmo to embroider some baby clothes for Cameran’s psychic predicted baby. Shepard Rose surprises Chelsea at her house, and she doesn’t seem nervous to see him, even after her rendition of events at the Commodore Club to Austen Kroll. She tells him not to judge her as she lounges around eating peanut butter right out of the jar. Shep wants to apologize if Chelsea thought he was trying to be inappropriate with her. Truth be told, he may have had a few of the feels for Chelsea, but he retreated before they could explore a potential relationship.
Finally Southern Charm has tapped into some drama that has nothing to do with a hot-tempered twenty-something and an aging politician who likes the scent of cocaine a woman…well, many women! After last week’s episode, where Kathryn Dennis and Thomas Ravenel finally slightly buried the hatchet, the once feuding duo is leaving the relationship madness for their cast mates…for the most part, at least. Naomie Olindo and Craig Conover are still struggling their way through couple’s therapy, and Shep Rose has become an unwanted equilateral corner in a love triangle with Austen Kroll and Chelsea Meissner.
Cam calls Chelsea in hopes of a happy hour to fill her time while her husband is on call. Unfortunately, Chelsea is meeting Kathryn at a shop downtown to help finalize the wardrobe for her upcoming photo shoot with daughter Kensie. When offered an invitation, Cameran jumps at the chance–either she really hates being home alone, or she’s slowly warming up to the idea of hanging with Kathryn. What would Patricia say about this turn of events?
Southern Charmseems to be returning to its roots without the past season’s bitter drama between Thomas Ravenel and Kathryn Dennis. On last night’s episode, the once tumultuous couple saw each other for the first time in nearly a year after a tentative turn as pen pals. Of course, we’ll see how long it lasts as T-Rav tries to forge a romantic relationship with Landon Clements…
Last night’s episode begins in Hampton Park where Thomas is hosting Saint’s first birthday, complete with a kitten and bunny petting zoo. As the crew preps for the celebration, Landon calls to regret. She’s not quite ready to play house yet. En route to the shindig, Liz is riding co-pilot with an anxious Kathryn as husband JD shuttles their brood. Also carpooling are Patricia Altschul and Cameran Eubanks who comment on just how embarrassing it must be to for Kathryn to be a guest at her own son’s birthday. So kind, and not at all condescending, for sure. Kathryn arrives and shares a robotic hug with T-Rav before hugging her precious babies. The pair awkwardly make small talk about their correspondence and card stock. Danni shows up (where has she been?) with JD and his kids following behind. Cameran embraces Kathryn while Pat heads in the opposite direction, navigating the goose poop in her Louboutins. As the rest of the crowd trickles in, Kathryn passes right by Jennifer Snowden and her baby. Come on, Kathryn. Show some of that forgiveness you’ve been vying for with your peers.
The lack of drama on this season’s Southern Charm has been a catch-22. Obviously, I don’t want drama for the sake of entertainment at the expense of two young children and their feuding parents, but without the screaming and roof raising, what are we watching? Last night’s episode reminded me why I fell in love with the first season. These folks seem to sincerely have fun with each other, and I believe they all have good hearts…if not intentions.
The show begins as Kathryn Dennis practices yoga in Hampton Park as Landon reaches out Thomas Ravenel to ask him out to dinner. Cameran Eubanks takes a call from her husband Jason Wimberly and informs him of their family of five predicted by the psychic. He suggests turning their downstairs bedroom into a nursery, but she’s making it a zen room…for now. In fact, she’s on her way to purchase all new fixings for the spot. In the Old Village, Craig Conover gets some epic news of his own from the Dean of the law school. He’s finally satisfied his upper level writing requirement which means he is officially finished with law school. Craig and Gizmo celebrate with a Facetime session with his parents and some cat treats. At Marshall’s Cameran is shopping with Chelsea to decorate her new zen room. Cameran rehashes the evening at Patricia’s, complete with Craig and Shep Rose screaming about forgiveness and her desire to stay above the fray. She’s not picking sides and wishes Kathryn well, she’s just strives to be drama free. Chelsea shares her initial meeting with Kathryn. She was expecting a nightmare but enjoyed her interaction with the group outsider.
Finally an episode of Southern Charm with some kick! Not only did it leave me craving some curry and a caftan, it finally centered around the dynamic we all want to watch. Whether you love or hate the drama constantly swirling around Thomas Ravenel and Kathryn Dennis, it makes for good television…and I feel a lot less guilty saying that now that they are less of a train wreck!
After her quick visit to Pork City, population two, Chelsea jokes with Cameran Eubanksthat Austen Kroll knocked the cobwebs off her hooha with their recent tryst. And here I was thinking Charleston had gotten yet another barbecue joint! As the girls gossip, Thomas takes daughter Kensie on a driving tour of Charleston pointing out all of the Ravenel rich history while omitting his prison stint, of course. While he’s droning on about the family name, his ex Kathryn is reaching out to his best friend–and her nemesis–to make amends. For the pot-stirring Whitney Sudler-Smith, that’s a voicemail worth its weight in dollar signs!
I have to say, I am enjoying this season of Southern Charm for no other reason than the lacking drama. It’s kind of nice when everyone gets along…for the most part, at least! Of course, with this crew, there are always whispers of underlying messiness. After Patricia Altschul and Whitney Sudler-Smith tried to set up Landon Clements and Thomas Ravenel at a small dinner party last week, I received an e-mail from a friend who saw the duo grabbing coffee at Starbucks this past Sunday (or as the rest of the world called it, Mother’s Day) with Kensie. Who knows if this intel is true, but if so, it’s a doozy! Maybe their budding romance isn’t just a story line? (or maybe it is?) That said, friends can have coffee together whenever they damn well please, but what a not-so-subtle burn to Kathryn Dennis if it’s accurate. Or perhaps she knows and everyone is getting along now?? Sure.
The most recent episode begins with everyone getting ready for another beautiful day in the Holy City. Kathryn heads to JD and Elizabeth’s house to catch up, and the trio discusses Jennifer Snowden’s sip-and-see. Kathryn can’t believe that Thomas was invited and she wasn’t, especially given that, according to Kathryn, Jennifer slept with T-Rav while Kathryn was pregnant. She definitely should have been included in the afternoon. Um, does she remember her lunch with Jennifer? Elizabeth skirts the issue, focusing on adorable Kensie, but JD rationalizes that it’s difficult to accommodate both at a party given their tumultuous past. As godparents, JD and Elizabeth want to see the couple co-parenting, and JD gives the same advice to Kathryn as he’s given to T-Rav. Just be civil for the children. Kathryn reveals that she has received a text message from Thomas, which is the first communication she’s had from him in over nine months. However, she’s not sure she’s ready to respond.
Talk about a double shot of Southern Charm! After Craig Conover acted like a straight-up asshat to his girlfriend Naomie Olindo, it seemed that the only solid couple on the show could be crumbling. Of course, use it Cameran Eubanks to swoop in with some love potion for her faint of heart co-stars. Shep Rose needs all the help he can get as he bid farewell to his latest slumber party guest. Why can’t girls just leave when he’s still sleeping? Why do some insist on sticking around…even suggesting lunch? The nerve! As he laments his love life, Shep takes a call from his doctor. His liver is inflamed and he may want to seriously think about cutting back on the alcohol–like completely. It’s a wake-up call for the eternal frat boy, for sure! Across town, Whitney Sudler-Smith is plotting with his mother Patricia Altschul to bring together Thomas Ravenel and Landon Clements. T-Rav has been feeling down and out about his player ways and needs a pick-me-up…preferably one with lady bits. Pat recalls a time when Landon approached her for life advice. Perhaps this is her calling? It sure beats internet dating!
Cameran is showing property to a very tardy Craig. He can’t seem to get anywhere on time. Craig finds one thing after another wrong with the potential investment property. Popcorn ceilings? Smaller bedrooms? Cameran tries to remind him that he’s going to be renting out this house, not living in it, but it’s not up to snuff for his portfolio. Um, that portfolio is empty, son! Cameran wonders how Naomie feels about this potential purchase, and Craig skirts the question. Cameran suspects that Craig is just telling Naomie what she wants to hear, but that is no way to build a relationship. Craig isn’t happy to learn that Naomie has spoken about their rifts to Cameran, and he admits that he will begin to resent her if he has to appease her at every turn. Laying the smack down, Cameran raises her voice. Does Craig understand how marriage works?
