Week five on Dancing with the Starswas Latin Week. The contestants stepped up their game this week. Some teams hit it out of the park, while others fall flat.
Jaleel White and Kym Johnson are up first, dancing the samba. Jaleel’s abs alone deserve some sort of trophy. Len is overjoyed at their rhythm. Up next is Melissa Gilbert and Maks doing the salsa. It’s still not clear exactly how severe Melissa’s injuries were last week. During their dance, they’re doing several moves that look rough on her head and neck. Maks hints that the injuries were exaggerated last week. To me, Melissa seems as awkward as Jack Wagner was on the dance floor. Bruno tells her to go with it, but reminds her again that she needs to show more control. Carrie Ann gives her credit for her increased confidence from week one. The judges give them a 21.
Maria Menounos and Derek Hough bring the heat again this week with their salsa. In rehearsal, Maria face plants during a move where she’s coming through Derek’s legs. She freezes there and is upset because she’s expecting that she’s a bloody mess, but there’s nary a scratch on her. After their dance, Carrie Ann declares that their kiss was too much. It should be about what you don’t show. And Len isn’t impressed with Derek taking his shirt off. It felt forced.
Katherine Jenkins and Mark Ballas dance a hot Argentine tango. Len says it had beauty and it was bittersweet. Bruno loved the choreography. They award them the highest score of the night so far: a 29.
Karina Smirnoff and Gavin DeGraw pick the samba. Len dubs it a ‘Shamba’. Ouch. They’re given the lowest score of the night: 19. Unless the voters light up the phone lines, I think these two are doomed tomorrow night.
William Levy and Cheryl Burke do the tango and it’s hot and perfect. Carrie Ann needs a bucket of ice after their dance, calling William the Latin dancing James Bond. They tie Katherine and Mark’s score of 29.
Gladys Knight and Tristan MacManus do a sweet samba and the judges praise her stage presence.
Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower knock it out of the park, as do Donald Driver and Peta Murgatroyd with their Argentine tango. Donald says he analyzes each dance like a football play. Len praises them for their lifts and Bruno gushes about the sexy build up of their dance.
It was a night of tears and tens on Dancing with the Stars. The theme of the night was ‘memorable years’ and there were plenty of tear-jerkering stories, paired with some beautiful dancing.
First up was Anna Trebunskaya and Jack Wagner. Bruno gushed and said they got the party started. All of the judges were impressed, landing them a respectable 24 points.
Maria Menounos and Derek Hough did the rumba to Material Girl. The judges gushed over it, calling it a little bit of bedroom and ballroom. Maria danced through that broken rib to earn a 27.
Gladys Knight says 1957 was special for her because it was her first tour and she was just 13. Gladys and Tristan danced their way through the fox trot and earned a 24. The judges gave her high praise for her flow and her grace.
Roshon Fegan and Chelsie Hightower danced a Michael Jackson tribute to the samba. Carrie Ann didn’t think it was their best dance since their transitions were a little clumsy. They wound up with a 25 for their efforts.
Gavin DeGraw and Karina Smirnoff impress with their sexy dance. Bruno shouts out “GAVIN YOU’VE GOT HIPS!” Carrie Ann declares that she has “Gavin fever”, but only enough to give them a 24.
Katherine Jenkinsand Mark Ballas earned the highest points of the night with their beautiful tribute to Katherine’s father who passed away from lung cancer. They waltzed their way to a 29. Carrie Anna was totally choked up and called it “magic”.
Sherri Shepherdand Val Chmerkovskiy dance a theatrical rumba together and earn a 24. Bruno says “mama can move” and was impressed with the way she held it together.
Next up was Melissa Gilbert, who broke her back in 2010 and wanted to celebrate with a peppy jive. Melissa and Maks Chmerkovskiy also earned a 24.
Rumba’ing their way to a 25, Jaleel White and Kym Johnson got some criticism for not being fluid enough.
William Levy chose 1995 as his most memorable year because he arrived in the United States after leaving Cuba. William and partner Cheryl Burke steamed up the dance floor with a sexy salsa. Len tells him he “conquered the salsa”.
Last up was Donald Driver, who dedicated his dance with Peta Murgatroyd to his friend who died of cancer in 2010. Their rumba earned a 26.
Who do you think will be sent on their way tonight? Here are the final tallies:
Katherine Jenkins & Mark Ballas – 29
Jaleel White & Kym Johnson – 25
William Levy & Cheryl Burke – 28
Gladys Knight & Tristan MacManus – 24
Jack Wagner & Anna Trebunskaya – 24
Sherri Shepherd & Val Chmerkovskiy – 24
Roshon Fegan & Chelsie Hightower – 25
Maria Menounos & Derek Hough – 27
Donald Driver & Peta Murgatroyd – 26
Melissa Gilbert & Maks Chmerkovskiy – 24
Gavin DeGraw & Karina Smirnoff – 24
TELL US – WHAT’D YOU THINK OF THE DANCES? THE COSTUMES? THE SCORES? THE SAD STORIES?
With less than two weeks until the premiere, ABC has now released the all new Dancing With The Stars season 14 cast costume photos!
The View’s Sherri Shepherd is pictured above in her silver sequence dress with partner Val Chmerkovskiy. More photos of the other stars and their partners are below!
And if you’re planning on making a few extra bucks betting on the outcome of Dancing with the Stars, the NYDailyNews is making it easier for you. Vegas odds-maker, America’s Line, has been kind enough to calculate the odds for the twelve new contestants on the “celebrity” (that term gets looser and looser as the seasons fly by, doesn’t it? #notyoujaleel) dance competition.
For example, many of you at home may not have heard of the Hispanic Brad Pitt, but as the star of his country’s prime soap opera (telenovella, to be use the correct term for a Spanish soap) the yummy, William Levy is favored with 9-2 odds to win the coveted mirror ball trophy. Those are early predictions, as the betting line was created within hours of ABC announcing the season 14 cast.
America’s Line President, Ben Eckstein reveals, “Last season, we correctly predicted J.R. Martinez as the favorite and eventual winner.” He continues, “This season, we’re gonna try another Latin star, William Levy. Known as the ‘Cuban Brad Pitt,’ Levy is gorgeous, he has a ‘special’ relationship with Jennifer Lopez, and with J-Lo as a mentor — remember she was a former Fly Girl — how can he possibly lose?” So you’re saying he can dance?
America’s Line isn’t the only statistician to play the odds. Wynn Las Vegas predicts The View‘s Sherri Shepherd to take the title, as she’s a 5-1 contender according to their math. What will this do to the talk show’s dynamic? Will Bawbawa be proud? Will Hasselbeck be jealous? Will Whoopi bust out a new pair of sneakers for each show? America’s Line cites Sherri’s odds as 15-1.
The site is kind enough to break down the statistics for each star. Hispanic hunk William Levy is at the top of the food chain with aforementioned 9-2 odds. Last season, his partner Cheryl Burke danced J.R. into the winner’s circle. It doesn’t hurt that William is tall, dark, and handsome…and that accent! According to Vegas, he’s a frontrunner who is easy on the eyes.
With not to shappy 5-1 odds is cheesehead NFL player, Donald Driver. While his partner, Peta Murgatroyd (wasn’t that a Jetsons’ phrase?), is dancing in her inaugural season, Donald is no stranger to winning. And not in a Charlie Sheen way. The dude has a Super Bowl ring to prove it.
My man Urkel, aka the grown up Jaleel White, gains 6-1 odds by America’s Line standards and gets an impressive 9-1 distinction from the Wynn Las Vegas. Who can blame them? It’s Urkel! He’ll win that mirror ball, smile cunningly into the camera and ask, “Did I do that?” Not to mention, since it’s Dancing with the Stars, he’s one of the few that will be perceived as a “star” across multiple generations. I’m sure Family Matters is still a staple in syndication. #winslowneighbor
Maria Menounos is holding strong with a 6-1 statistic from both oddsmakers. Not only does she host Extra, she Tebows with Tim himself and starts off the competition with an already rocking, fit body. She’ll be a contender.
R&B superstar, Gladys Knight has 6-1 odds according to America’s Line, but Wynn is only offering a 20-1 spread. No worries though, she’s been hip-shaking with the Pips since before most of the voters were born. While that could potentially hurt the Motown songstress, I hope it will open her music up to an entirely new fan base.
Opera singer Katherine Jenkins (forgive me, but who?) garners 8-1 and 16-1 odds from America’s Line and Wynn Las Vegas respectively. She’s cute, she’s tiny, and she can sing…in a genre that most people only have heard of when preceded by “The Phantom of the.” An underdog, yes… but doesn’t America love one of those?
Of course it wouldn’t be a recent DWTS season if ABC didn’t go after the tween vote. Ron Bergeron isn’t stupid…The Disney Channel needs to represent. This season, it offers 20-year-old Roshon Fegan, star of Shake It Up, as its sacrificial lamb. Apparently, the Sprouse twins were too busy filming Zack and Cody Spend Senior Year on the Moon. Who can blame them? Going to school on a cruise ship is overrated. Roshon’s odds? 10-1 from America’s Line and 7-1 according to Wynn.
Gavin DeGraw, who recieves 12-1 odds from America’s Line and 25-1 odds from Wynn Las Vegas, is a pensive singer/songwriter, takes the competition up a notch. He’s promised to continue touring while learning his routines and filming the show. Seeing as he recently recovered from being violently attacked on the streets of Manhattan, I’d say this is small potatoes for the guy.
Jack Wagner receives 12-1 odds from America’s Line and 14-1 odds from Wynn Las Vegas. Jack is fortunate to span many a fan’s television lifeline. Did I watch him on General Hospital? Heck no, but my dad’s girlfriend did…as did everyone else in that age group demographic. Was I glued to my television screen in college (yes, I’m old) when he was the hottest guy next to Grant Show on Melrose Place? Yes, yes I was. Sadly, despite his stellar day and night soap resume, he’ll likely appeal to viewers as Heather Locklear’s (God, she was a great bitch as Amanda–RIP MP) recent ex-fiance.
Melissa Gilbert, ex-wife of my childhood husband, Bruce Boxleitner (if you didn’t watch/have never heard of Scarecrow and Mrs. King, I am sad for you. #Netflix) is pulling 12-1 odds from Wynn Las Vegas and 20-1 odds from America’s Line. Most famous for her long run on Little House on the Prairie, it begs the question, what would Michael Landon say?
Personally, Urkel aside, Martina Navratilova is someone I would LOVE to see make it far in this competition. I love tennis. I play tennis. I am horribly God awful at tennis. But I have always loved my tennis icons…and while America’s Line gives this superstar athlete and Wimbledon champion 25-1 odds coupled with Wynn’s 30-1 odds, I have a feeling she’ll prove us all wrong. Deuces.

TELL US – THOUGHTS ON THE NEW DWTS CAST? ARE YOU EXCITED ABOUT THE NEW SEASON?
Nancy, 51, reveals she has already shed over 10 pounds in just a few weeks of dancing! “I’ve inadvertently lost 10 lbs. on the I’m-too-tired-to-eat diet,” Nancy told PEOPLE on Friday. “By the time I get the children [3-year-old twins Lucy and John David] ready for school, then practice and then come home, I’m like exhausted.”
Unlike some other controversial figures who have danced before her and shall remain nameless, coughs – Kate Gosselin, Nancy surprisingly reveals she is enjoying her time on the show despite the grueling schedule. “If you would have told me five to seven hours of dance practice was fun, I would have never believed you,” she said, “but it is.”
Nancy, who is partnered with DWTS newbie Tristan MacManus, however admits she sometimes gets nervous and we’re guessing finding herself in the bottom two on Tuesday night did not help matters. “My nerves are much, much worse,” she said. “I’m a fish out of water on the dance floor. It’s a lot more nerve wracking than trying a murder case.”
In other news, the first DWTS dating rumors have finally emerged! In what we have come to expect every season, Star magazine is reporting that things are beginning to get hot and heavy between dancing partners Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas. Kristin was dumped by her NFL fiance Jay Cutler back in July, while Mark and American Idol alum Pia Toscano ended their 5-month relationship just two weeks ago.
Star reports the two share an “obvious attraction” that recently had “tongues wagging” during a recent outing. “She was sitting on his lap, and he nuzzled her neck,” an eyewitness tells the mag. “They were having dinner with Derek Hough but didn’t pay him any attention because they were too wrapped up in each other.”
And in usual DWTS fashion, Kristin and Mark issued a non-denial denial! Aka even though they might not really be dating, they would prefer fans to think they are so they can keep voting for them!
PEOPLE magazine caught up with the dancing couple to ask about the dating rumors. “That s––t’s already started,” Mark, 25, so eloquently stated. “She is a sweetheart. We have a lot of fun. We laugh a lot. We’re getting along great.”
Kristin also chimed in with her non-denial. “I kind of expect [the dating rumors], to be honest,” she says. “But that’s what happens when you put two people together.”
As for what led to the Mark and Pia break-up, the two officially stated they were simply too busy to keep seeing each other, though sources close to Mark reveal Pia became too clingy and jealous of his relationship with Kristin. Sources close to Pia however deny that stating Mark wanted to end things to make way for his showmance with Kristin.
A new episode of DWTS airs tonight on ABC at 8/7c.
Above is the first glimpse of Chaz Bono, the first transgendered contestant on the show, in his dancing costume alongside partner Lacey Schwimmer. As we reported, the casting of Chaz, 42, has proven to be a rather controversial one for ABC with some fans voicing their disapproval.
In other DWTS news, TMZ is reporting today that Rob Kardashian has been slacking off when it comes to practicing his dance moves. Rob’s partner Cheryl Burke is reportedly “fed up” with him as he refuses to practice for more than 2 hours with her. Other contestants are putting in over 5 hours a day.
Cheryl now feels this shows Rob’s lack of interest in doing the show. And while he’s busy not practicing, Rob is reportedly bragging to his older sister Kimmie Kardashianthat he will top her DWTS performance by making it past week 3. Good luck with that one Robbie!
Dancing With The Stars returns to ABC on Sep. 19 at 8/7c.

The revelation was made this morning on Good Morning America. One of the biggest surprises is the addition of Val Chmerkovskiy to the cast! Val is the younger brother of DWTS hotness Maksim Chmerkovskiy. And despite the speculation that we might be getting the first same-sex couple this season, openly gay style guru Carson Kressley is paired up with a female partner.
Returning this season is three-time champ Derek Hough after taking a break last season. Derek is paired up with Ricki Lake.
Below are the full pairings for DWTS Season 13 -
Nancy Grace and Tristan MacManus
Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy
David Arquette and Kym Johnson
Kristin Cavallari and Mark Ballas
Rob Kardashian and Cheryl Burke
Elisabetta Canalis and Val Chmerkovskiy
Ron Artest and Peta Murgatroyd
RJ Martinez and Karina Smirnoff
Ricki Lake and Derek Hough
Chaz Bono and Lacey Schwimmer
Carson Kressley and Anna Trebunskaya
Chynna Phillips and Tony Dovolani
Meanwhile this season’s Kate GosselinNancy Grace, who is arguably the biggest casting surprise this year, is speaking out on doing the show.
In a new interview, Nancy reveals she thought she was dreaming when she got the call from DWTS. “I feel like Cinderella that got invited to the ball. I don’t know how to dance,” Nancy, 51, states. “I don’t know what I’m going to wear, but I know I have been invited.”
Nancy adds, “I want to have fun. Ever since my fiance was killed in ’79, my whole life has been about putting bad guys away, going to law school, making law review, trying cases, representing crime victims – and this is such a departure, to get to dress up in crazy outfits and dance. Are you kidding me?!” Nancy also states she is NOT counting on Casey Anthony’s vote!
The new season of DWTS premieres Sep. 19 on ABC.
