Avery Mills and husband Omar Albakour were featured on last season’s 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Day. They were filmed meeting for the first time in Lebanon, and marrying there before Avery had to return to the US. Omar and Avery quickly became fan favorites with their youthful and eager love for each other.
Part of Avery’s storyline was her recent conversion to Islam before meeting Omar online. Avery was raised as a Christian but decided to convert at the age of 18. Navigating the relationship with Omar was also a test of Avery’s resolve for her new religion. One challenge fans got to witness was their marriage in Islamic court, where Avery was completely unaware of the procedures. But despite a few hitches, Omar and Avery are very much committed to each other and their faith.
After watching last night’s episode of 90 Day Fiance, I was left very confused. I didn’t know whether to feel pity or happy that the rose colored glasses have been removed for some. I know they say love is blind, but I didn’t know it removed all of your senses.

90 Day Fiance episodes should be shown in premarital counseling sessions–as examples of what not to do when getting married. Although some couples go on to have happy marriages, many others do not. Case in point–Colt Johnson and Larissa Dos Santos Lima. Anyone could have seen the couple were ill-suited for each other, with different temperaments, personalities–and views of what role mother-in-law Debbie Johnson would play in their marriage.
The tempestuous lovebirds weathered Larissa’s domestic violence arrests, jealousy and Colt’s online flirting. Inevitably, the couple called it quits. After their split, Colt and Larissa flaunted new relationships and tried to extend their 15 minutes of fame. Both seemed to enjoy taking post-split digs at each other, but they eventually came to an amicable divorce. And what does one do after a divorce? If you are Colt Johnson, you get rid of the evidence.
Last night’s episode of 90 Day Fiance left me wondering why any of these couples are together. Every season we route for at least one couple. At this point, I am finding it hard to see any real contenders for a long-lasting relationship. I hate to say it, but every 90 Day Fiance couple seems doomed for different reasons.
Tania Maduro and Syngin Colchester struggle with communication while apart. Juliana Custodio wants independence in her relationship with Michael Jessen. Religious beliefs divide Mike and Natalie. This season’s 90 Day Fiance crew is an interesting cast of characters, as usual. Where else can you see battling bee keepers in love, romancing and fighting through language apps like Mursel Mistanoglu and Anna Campisi? Or witness the tense dynamics between Anny and Robert, who decides to show his lady love a beautiful new apartment–that they can’t even move into. No rhyme or reason is what makes the show reality gold.
Michael Jessen and Juliana Custodio have been one of the more interesting couples on the show. Michael’s smart and funny children Max and Cece are the breakout stars of the season. Forget the couples! Michael and Juliana’s age, cultural and income differences are constantly in play. On the most recent episode, the couple saw a lawyer about a prenuptial agreement, but nothing was resolved. Now, Michael is speaking out about how he and his family are being portrayed on 90 Day Fiance–and he is not holding back.
One nice thing about the 90 Day Fiance franchise is that you can expect fresh programming for most of the year. TLC has consistently added new spin-offs that quench viewers’ thirst for more of the crazy antics of cast members. And how lucky we all are to benefit from it!
Among the popular spin-offs of the show has been 90 Day Fiance: Before the 90 Days. Last season’s show was drama packed, with Angela Deem and Michael Ilesanmi’s endless back-and-forth relationship, Caesar’s ill-fated solo trip to Mexico and 90 Day veteran Darcey Silva optimistically looking for love–again. TLC recently announced a new season of the show, which will hold a few surprises for viewers.
