Abby Lee Miller will self-surrender to prison and begin serving a one-year sentence for bankruptcy fraud on July 12. Instead of contrition, remorse, or humility after pleading guilty to hiding $750,000 in her bankruptcy filing, Abby continues to maintain her innocence and insist she’s a “nice Catholic girl” who was an unwitting victim of other’s financial schemes.
“It’s a little surreal. I know that I am not a criminal mastermind,” the Dance Moms star decried. “I listened to the wrong people. I trusted people.”
I can’t say that I’m surprised by this news: former Dance Moms star Abby Lee Miller has been sentenced to a year and a day in prison. She is not the first reality star to get in trouble for fraud and weirdly enough I’m sure that she won’t be the last.
I don’t get why anyone would think it’s a good idea to brag about a successful lifestyle on a reality television show when they don’t want to pay taxes or accurately report their earnings- yet it keeps happening.
Nine times out of ten, I’m going to feel badly for someone facing something so serious, even with the knowledge that the outcome is deserved by the offender. Sure, Stevie J. of Love & Hip Hop Atlanta fame owes millions in child support, but don’t send him to jail–give him another show! Heck, I felt terrible for Teresa Giudice when she got sent up the river, but dare I say how she handled her prison time is one of the classier things the Real Housewives of New Jersey star has ever done. However, I just don’t feel badly for Dance Moms antagonist Abby Lee Miller. Lock her up for a bit. Perhaps she’ll gain a little perspective and humility. Who am I kidding?
Facing sentencing at a hearing tomorrow and another on February 24th (after what seems like a decade’s worth of postponements), Abby’s legal team is scrambling for a hail Mary so the dance studio owner can avoid any jail time. She’s currently facing up to five years in prison and an excess of $5 million in fines thanks to twenty counts of fraud involving her bankruptcy and generally just forgetting to declare some Aussie currency she brought back into the country…chump change, really.
Even though there is always drama happening between Abby Lee Miller and the mothers on Dance Moms, there is a lot more craziness going on behind the scenes with Abby’s legal troubles. This fraud case seems like it will never end. I am curious about the way it’s going to end up. Will Abby end up with jail time? We won’t be getting an answer anytime soon since Abby’s sentencing has been pushed to 2017.
I feel like this case has been going on forever and I have absolutely no involvement, so I can’t imagine how Abby is feeling. And weirdly enough, it’s not even Abby and her legal team who pushed for the sentencing to be later than originally planned.
I might be in the minority with this one, but there’s just something about Abby Lee Miller that I love. I don’t think I would feel this way if I was on Dance Moms, but as an outsider who is addicted to her show, I can’t help enjoying her ridiculous antics.
Nevertheless, one thing I can’t condone is Abby joining the trend set by reality stars of hiding income and facing jail time. Abby is far from the first reality star to face this kind of issue, so that makes it especially tough to watch. Didn’t she know better!? Apparently not and now Abby is speaking out about the charges against her and her fears about the very real possibility that she will be sent to prison. The woman who has shown pretty much zero empathy for other humans is trying to tug on people’s heartstrings with her recent comments.
Summer may have ended(ish) in the blink of an eye (seriously, where did it go??), but the season’s anthem still rings true. Justin Timberlake reminds us all just to dance, dance, dance. Maybe we “Can’t Stop the Feeling” but I think those involved in Abby Lee Miller’s legal woes may have misinterpreted the lyrics just a tad.
The Dance Moms stars’ legal team–along with her prosecutors–clearly misheard JT because for the Lifetime reality star, “ain’t nobody gettin’ sentenced soon, so keep dancing!” It’s unclear if she’ll keep dancing with her show, but she’ll at least avoid any potential jail time a bit longer. I, for one, think the mini team had something to do with this!
It seems like there is always some drama when Abby Lee Miller is involved. And no, I’m not referring to her feuding with the mothers on her show Dance Moms. Abby is in some serious trouble these days.
The fans saw Abby breaking down and getting all kinds of erratic during the latest season of Dance Moms and it really seemed like a lot of her antics stemmed from stressing out over her legal drama. Now shit is getting really since Abby pleaded guilty to twenty different fraud charges and for violating currency reporting laws.
