Survivor: Edge of Extinction Premiere Recap: First Impressions

What’s that you say? Survivor is still on the air? And – GASP! – it just started its 38th season??? If this sounds familiar, than you are either a Survivor fan who has had this conversation countless times in your life while explaining your obsession to your non-Survivor friends, or you are a non-Survivor friend who is legitimately wondering how – after 19 YEARS – this show is still on TV. Well, let me explain it to you briefly: It’s because Survivor is THE best Reality-TV Competition Show, the grand-daddy of them all, and is still bringing it…Every. Single. Time.

If you don’t believe it’s still on, or you trying to do quick math trying to figure out how it could have had 38 seasons, you may also be surprised to find out that it is not just on the air, but it’s also STILL winning its time-slot in all of the major demographics. Add to this, that it has some of the most loyal, dedicated fans of any television show. Yes, Survivor has been on the…ahem…”edge of extinction” many times in the past, with rumors that the show would end countless times over the years, but still it prevails. The key format of the game is still intact, but it has evolved drastically since the days of Richard Hatch, Sue Hawk or Rudy Boesch…in today’s game, 46 is now “old,” and a simple alliance won’t cut it…you need to be thinking four, and five steps ahead. And now entering Season 38, we’ve been spoiled with some of the very best Survivor seasons of all-time over the past couple years, showing that Survivor will endure for many more years to come.

So you might as well give in and join the party! Whether you’re a long-time fan of the show and have seen every episode since Season 1 (like me!), or whether you are returning to the show after taking some seasons (or some years) off…or even if you have decided to watch Survivor for the very first time: I welcome you! Now let’s dive in to the Premiere Episode of Survivor: Edge of Extinction and find out what all the hype is about!

As I do at the beginning of every recap, please heed the following: Remember that this recap assumes that you have already seen this week’s Premiere Episode of Survivor: Edge of Extinction. If you have not and don’t want to be spoiled, please come back later! It’s important to add that while we WILL hit on all of the important developments of the episode, this is not a linear “blow-by-blow” recap. It is more of a discussion and reaction of what we just witnessed together.

Cast Revealed! See Who Will Compete on Season 38 Of Survivor: Edge of Extinction

Less than three weeks (!!!) away from the two-hour Premiere, the cast of the upcoming Survivor: Edge of Extinction was officially announced today by CBS. The show’s 38th season will kick-off on Wednesday, Feb. 20th. There will be 18 contestants vying for the million-dollar prize and title of Sole Survivor.

Survivor is coming off one of its most successful and best seasons in years. Survivor: David vs. Goliath was universally praised as a Top-5 all-time season. Can “Edge of Extinction” build on the show’s momentum. Or is it bound to deflate a bit? Let’s dive into what we know about Season 38 thus far, and let’s meet the cast!

Survivor Game Changers

A season of Survivor called “Game Changers” had a lot to live up to, but it delivered on all accounts. Wednesday night saw Season 34 come to a close with four Tribal Councils that whittled down the remaining six contestants to just one…the Sole Survivor and winner of the million dollar prize.

It was a dramatic ending to what has been a crazy season, and I had the chance to speak with all six of the Final Six players in the game heading into the Finale, including the winner. But before we proceed, you know the drill: Make sure only to read on if you have seen this week’s episode, as spoilers are to follow! Turn back now! If you want to get caught up, be sure to check out the Finale Episode Recap here.

Survivor Finale

That’s pretty much the question isn’t it? Tonight, the 34th (!!!) season of Survivor – the world’s greatest Reality Competition TV Show – will come to a close, where one of the six remaining “game changers” will be crowned the Sole Survivor and win a million dollars. Like we have grown accustomed to, tonight we will be treated with a two-hour finale episode, followed by the one-hour live reunion show, where hopefully Sia doesn’t show up this year.

And boy oh boy is there a lot of game still to be played. Not only are we down to six people, but there are still three Immunity Idols and the “Legacy Advantage” still in play heading into tonight. Get strapped in and ready, because we’re about to break down the chances of the remaining players left in the game and get you set for tonight’s big finish.

Survivor Game Changers

History was made on Survivor Wednesday night with a Survivor “first,” as we witnessed one of the most chaotic and unpredictable Tribal Councils in the show’s history. It followed a huge twist that sent two competing tribes to Tribal Council – the same tribal council – where one person was voted off in dramatic fashion.

There is always someone on the receiving end of any twist the Survivor producers introduce, and this wasn’t an easy one to swallow given how things went down at Tribal. Caution, as spoilers from this week’s episode are to follow! Turn back now! If you want to get caught up, be sure to check out the Episode 3 Recap here.
