Recently, the Below Deck Mediterranean Season 5 trailer dropped. As expected, Captain Sandy Yawn and Hannah Ferrier are back and so is another franchise alum. Deckhand Malia White has returned and she has been promoted to bosun. This means that she is the first female bosun on any Below Deck show. That’s a pretty big deal and a great thing for the franchise and for yachting in general.
Well, some people don’t see it that way. Some fans actually criticized the show for having a female bosun. In 2020. WOW. Well, don’t worry. Captain Sandy came through in Malia’s defense.
Below Deck Mediterranean is back for Season 5 this summer and fans can be sure of three things. One is that Captain Sandy Yawn will be at the helm, second is that Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier will be grossly mismanaging the interior, and finally, that the two will not get along.
Of course the views will also be amazing, and this year it looks like the location has moved to the Spanish coast. Another first is the size of the yacht. Captain Sandy will be managing the largest vessel in Below Deck history this season. “The Wellington” is an 184 foot mega yacht and that’s quite a bit of space to manage. The big surprise is which former crew member is returning as Bosun.
Jack Stirrup as a deckhand on Below Deck Mediterranean left much to be desired. His work ethic was consistently low and he blamed Bosun Joao Franco for his lack of inspiration. Captain Sandy Yawn repeatedly had to ask Jack to tie his hair back. The risk of getting kicked off the boat was pretty high until Jack started to change his behaviors.
Finally, Jack found a reason to stay on the boat. Second Stew Aesha Scott caught Jack’s eye and the two started an endearing courtship. By the end of the charter season, the two were walking off the dock together. The boat-mance didn’t last, unfortunately, and Jack went back to his ex-girlfriend without giving Aesha any clarity that he was doing so. He later claimed that production coerced him into expressing deeper feelings than he had at the time.
Below Deck cast member Rhylee Gerber always presented a tough exterior. Whether it was a simple exchange between coworkers or answering to the lineup of bosuns that tried to manage her, Rhylee’s reactionary attitude seemed to escalate situations. Of course, the toxic masculinity onboard this past season was beyond acceptable, but dealing with male coworkers often put Rhylee on the defensive. Recall the season with the perfectly respectful Ross Inia as her bosun.
But that is just in the professional realm. Rhylee does have a positive male relationship in her life. That person is her stepfather. This weekend, Rhylee shared some touching photos of her with her stepfather.
Joao Franco’s first season on Below Deck Mediterranean did not inspire a lot of confidence in his ability for a respectful romantic relationship. His constant flirtations with Kasey Cohen while wooing a smitten Brooke Laughton was cringe-worthy at best. Their relationship chugged along for a bit after the season ended. Brooke went to visit Joao’s family in Zimbabwe, which seemed promising, but she ultimately broke up with him shortly thereafter.
Of course that all played out in the Bravolebrity spotlight. Since then, Joao has been keeping his relationship with girlfriend Michelle Dicu relatively private, except for a few Instagram posts. But on Friday, Joao did share some very exciting news with his followers.
Captain Sandy Yawn, star of Below Deck Mediterranean, is taking care of business. She is a leader in a career mostly dominated by men. Cancer tried, but Sandy beat it. And she overcame a life-threatening motorcycle accident. Throughout the many personal challenges Sandy has faced in her life, she has pushed through with a staunch positive attitude and forayed that into becoming one of Bravo’s most-discussed celebrities.
Even if Captain Sandy isn’t your cup of tea, with her penchant for giving hugs and exasperation of Chief Stews who take too many
meltdowns smoking breaks, there is one thing that cannot be denied. Sandy is a badass. Recently, Sandy experienced another harrowing medical incident. Now she is using her platform to raise awareness and share some advice we could all probably stand to hear. Listen to your body, y’all.
Below Deck has become one of the hottest franchises on Bravo. People love to watch the glamorous yacht life and the drama between the crew. Captain Lee Rosbach is somewhat of a pop culture icon at this point. Unlike Captain Sandy Yawn, Captain Lee rules his crew with an iron fish. There is no room for BS, and you need to get your work done. It takes a strong person to work under someone like him.
Before Below Deck, the ruling franchise on Bravo was The Real Housewives. Think for a second and imagine what a crossover might look like. Imagine if Captain Lee hired one of the Housewives to work on his yacht. There is no shortage of Housewives to choose from, but some may lack the work ethic required. Luckily for inquisitive fans, Captain Lee is FINALLY revealing which Housewife he’d want to work with.
Andy Cohen announced that Real Housewives of Salt Lake City will join the Real Housewives franchise this past weekend at BravoCon. Both Andy and the Bravo Network hinted that a new Real Housewives show was on the way. However, it’s fair to say that most people did not expect the new show to take place in Salt Lake City. Talk about random! Nevertheless, most people who complained about it will probably tune in anyway. The same thing happens with the current Real Housewives shows that may be falling short.
One show that continually comes through is Below Deck. Its successor Below Deck Mediterranean is an equally compelling show. And now, the Below Deck franchise is expanding with a third show on the network.
