As more and more Below Deck cast members progress through different stages of land-life, us fans will be able to reconnect with some familiar faces. And isn’t it nice to see some happy, ecstatic brides-to-be or pregnancy bumps on social media? But most alums slip from our minds, like Below Deck Mediterranean Season One deck hand Danny Zureikat, being hauled off on a donkey after a disastrous performance onboard. Of course, production likely prefers casting fresh faces each season. Especially with lower ranking staff, it’s one season and done with most of them.
Such was Brooke Laughton’s tenure on Below Deck Mediterranean. She joined the crew as a very capable second stew in Season 3. Brooke and Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier got along rather well until she started crushing on Joao Franco and Hannah ducked out of work responsibilities to smoke ciggies with Bosun Conrad Empson. Third Stew Kasey Cohen also had her eye on Joao and a rather sloppy love triangle resulted. Happier days were waiting for Brooke after she left the show, and just this week, she shared some very special news.
Anyone watching the new season of Below Deck Mediterranean knows that a boat romance is on the horizon. Take that from experience watching the Below Deck franchise, and the powers of hiring a certain mix of attractive people and its inevitable that crew members will be hooking up. It’s just a matter of who, when, and whether it will be a hookup or something more.
Boat romances are just messy, season after season. Gary King and Sydney Zaruba didn’t wait past the first episode of Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2. This rather unfortunate decision prevented Gary from getting the girl he really wanted in the end. Of course, Alli Dore moved on to greener pastures and is happily awaiting the birth of her first child with boyfriend. Jessica More and Robert Westergaard got in over their heads with emotions, but there was nothing to keep them together in the end. Even after a dream vacation in Bali together. Former chief stew Hannah Ferrier and Bosun Conrad Empson bonded over cigarettes and a mutual distaste for Captain Sandy Yawn before things went sour over an argument about fifty euros. This small sample of broken hearts is, of course, one reason we keep watching.
Below Deck Mediterranean has turned into a hotbed of discourse. The season started off on a female-empowering note, with ladies in the lead positions, ready to tackle privileged guests and a crew of television hopefuls. Under the direction of Captain Sandy Yawn, it appears everyone might be micromanaged into despair. Everyone except Malia White. Malia returned with a new title under her belt and as you know, with great power there must also come great responsibility…
As the yacht’s resident bosun and the first woman to hold the title on camera, Malia has a lot on her plate. She takes her new role very seriously and appears to be following the rules, much to the delight of Captain Sandy. But is she dipping her toes into the refreshing micro-managing seas of her leader? Hannah Ferrier might have an opinion.
Was there ever a boat-mance with a happy ending on any of the Below Deck shows? Below Deck Sailing Yacht’s Paget Berry and Ciara Duggan don’t really count because they’ve just been living in some kind of time warp, stuck on Parsifal with no other options. They bicker like a married couple and flirt like adolescents. But they are the best we’ve got.
No other couple has worked out once the boat docked and they had to face the real world together. Aesha Scott and Jack Stirrup had promise on Below Deck Mediterranean last season. Until he returned to his ex-girlfriend and they had a child together. Hannah Ferrier gave it a go with Conrad Empson. They didn’t even make it to the end of the season as a result of her emasculating and belittling comments towards him about money. Malia White played two guys at once, one of them being our very own, Chef Adam Glick. Now Adam is in the middle of another turbulent relationship that isn’t looking it’s going to end happily.
Captain Sandy Yawn knows how to keep her cool in stressful nautical situations. Below Deck Mediterranean fans have seen her docking the yacht with inches to spare and deal with multiple anchor disasters. She had an incompetent chef in her galley, and had to mentor deck crew members in past seasons.
Despite all these issue and more, Captain Sandy keeps returning to the series and has become the face of the show, along with Chief Stew Hannah Ferrier. These two ladies are often in conflict regarding management of the interior, but the paycheck must be too good to part ways over table settings.
Can you believe we are coming to the end of the Below Deck Mediterranean charter season? What a season it has been! Not only have we been treated to the beautiful vistas of the South of France, we have been treated to some beautiful drama from the crew and the guests.
Last season, chief stew Hannah Ferrier was the Queen of Boat Drama, mooning over bosun Conrad Empson. Hannah was freqeuntly derelict in her job duties, taking smoke breaks galore–and even took to her bed for a day with a bad case of Mediterranean Love Sickness. Try that with your boss and see what happens! This season, Hannah has seemed more committed to her job, boldly announcing at the start of the season, “I feel like this charter season my job is my number one priority.” Do Hannah’s crewmates think she has lived up to her lofty new employee performance goal?
Fans have watched Captain Sandy Yawn navigate through the rough seas of boat flings with her crew on Below Deck Mediterranean. It was not the epitome of courtship when Hannah Ferrier whined about cigs to Conrad Empson. The same applies to Malia White and her non-Harlequin romance with
onion lover Chef Adam Glick and/or the deck crew. Being crammed together like sardines on a yacht often leads to the occasional dalliance, but is rarely a long-lasting event.
But what about the Captain? Extensive traveling and time away from her home base has proven to be a challenge in Sandy’s own personal life. She has previously discussed the difficulty of maintaining a relationship whilst being in a career where you aren’t just in separate time zones, you can be clear across the world. Well, you can start humming The Love Boat theme song along with me, because things have changed.
Hannah Ferrier may or may not watch herself on Below Deck Mediterranean. Perhaps for the sake of optimism, let’s assume she did view herself last season, took stock of what the rest of us saw, and decided to do something about it.
Maybe Hannah took note of the endless smoke breaks, and the stress it put on her interior team. Certainly, working her way through a giant carton of cigarettes and owing Conrad Empson 50 Euros seemed to backfire on her. Hannah badgered Conrad to no end because he asked for that money back.
