Remember when Tiger King: Joe Exotic brought some light into this dark time? It feels like centuries ago. The world we were exposed to in this Netflix docuseries was all kinds of messy. At the center is Joe Exotic , aka Joseph Maldonado-Passage, a Tiger breeder/fake country singer who loved Liberace’s wardrobe as much as he hated Carole Baskin. Baskin is the founder of Big Cat Rescue near Tampa, Florida (these stories are meant for Florida, no?), and may or may not have fed her first husband to the tigers. Regardless, Carol and Joe were nemeses for years. So much so that Joe hired the world’s most untrustworthy hitman to kill Carol for a paltry $3,000. (Remember Episode 7 when the hit man in the bathtub said *uck it, took the money and went to a strip club?!).
Anyway, other insane characters are involved in this wild story of twists and turns. In Episode 2 we met Bhagavan “Doc” Antle and his creepy harem of brainwashed women. Then we met disgusting Jeff Lowe, who very likely incentivized Joe to hire a hit man to kill Carole. All of which was perhaps an elaborate scheme so Jeff could gain control of Joe’s Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park. In sum, Joe Exotic was found guilty of this murder-for-hire plot, charged for violating the Endangered Species Act, and for falsifying wildlife records. He will be sitting in prison for the next 22 years, unless our President grants him that pardon. Today, news has been shared that offers yet another twist in this already twisted tale.
In the midst of the craziness that is 2020, the Tiger King phenomenon lives on. Even if you haven’t watched the seven part Netflix series, you’ve undoubtedly heard about it. Breakout star Joe Exotic, who is currently serving a 22 year sentence in an Oklahoma prison, was even mentioned during one of President Donald Trump’s press conferences. He has become a bona fide star.
Fans have been hungry for more Tiger King content since the series dropped on Netflix. The series could not have come at a more perfect time. When news broke of a scripted version of the story, the Internet went crazy. Twitter was wild with casting suggestions on which stars should play characters like Carole Baskin and Doc Antle. And now, the first official casting announcement has been made.
Since it’s debut on Netflix on March 20th, everybody has been clamoring for more “Tiger King.” The original seven-part docu-series was perfectly binge-able and the latest streaming obsession, coming right at a time when most every American found themselves sequestered or under quarantine in the comfort of their own homes. Just recently, Netflix released some numbers on the show, claiming that “Tiger King” has had more viewers than the original season of “Stranger Things,” with a whopping 19 million viewers just here in the U.S. and over 34 million worldwide.
Well Netflix delivered an Easter surprise this Sunday, giving us an all-new episode in the saga of Joe Exotic. Actually, Episode 8, entitled “The Tiger King and I,” acts more as an epilogue, an after-show, hosted by Joel McHale (“Community,” “Talk Soup”), because, why not? In the style of most other shows during this pandemic, Episode 8 consisted of isolated interviews conducted by Joel McHale. Several of the players from Tiger King gave us updates on their lives post-show. They also offered up several other juicy tidbits of information. Joel was a fair and funny host, respectfully mixing in some humorous questions to go with the more direct and serious questions that had been on everyone’s mind.
The biggest omission from this “bonus” episode was, of course, Joe Exotic himself, now serving a 22-year sentence for the crimes he committed. Also missing were two of the biggest characters from the series, Carole Baskin and Doc Antle, but there was plenty of story left to tell from the eclectic panel of guests Joel had assembled.

Tiger King has kept fans interested long after the show’s initial release. There are murder plots, big cats and a wild cast of characters. But one thing that made Tiger King so riveting is the relationships between all these big cat people. They are strange to say the least. Carole Baskin, who married her current husband, Howard Baskin while he was dressed in some caveman/tiger ensemble. And let’s not forget she has been accused of knocking off her previous husband, Don Lewis, and feeding him to their tigers. This is a claim she has vehemently denied but after the series, it’s raised more questions than answers.
Then there is Doc Antle, who seems to be running a harem of women out of his sanctuary. I will never understand how that man has gotten so many women to be with him. Finally, in what is possibly the strangest of all relationships, is Joe Exotic. Apparently, Joe had 5 husbands total but only 3 of them were featured on the docuseries. John Finlay, the toothless wonder shown in the series, was actually Joe’s third husband. Lucky number 4 was Travis Maldonado, who wed Joe in ceremony with John too. But John moved on to a woman and Travis met an untimely death, leaving Joe to look for someone else. And he found him in a then-22-year-old Dillon Passage.
Hey all you cool cats and kittens! We are back with another Tiger King story. Despite Joe Exotic being the intended
train wreck star of the show, one thing people can’t stop talking about is whether or not Carole Baskin killed her husband, Don Lewis. Is there anyone out there who has watched that doesn’t think Carole killed her husband? Anyone? Show yourselves now!
Well, I know the people who DO think Carole killed him and I am one of them. The others are Joe and his whole team of merry maniacs (obviously). Also Jeff Lowe and his crew. Don’s old attorney/friend, Joe Fritz, even suspects foul play and wants the cops to come over for a beer to discuss it. Then there’s Don’s family and former assistant, Anne McQueen. Hell, even O.J. Simpson got on the Carole Killed Him Train.
Another day, another pop culture tie-in to the Netflix show Tiger King. Recently, a photo resurfaced on Doc Antle’s Instagram account featuring Southern Charm cast member Naomie Olindo and her man Metul Shah.
The photo is from June 2019, long before Tiger King came into my life. Nevertheless, the couple still got a lot of flack for visiting the safari in Myrtle Beach.
There are lessons to be learned from Tiger King and the brief explosive reign of Joe Exotic. Live by the code of the jungle, metaphorically die by it too. In the series finale Joe goes down for orchestrating a murder for hire plot to once and for all stop Carole Baskin from stealing his zoo. The zoo Joe does not in fact even own anymore.
Joe caged wild animals and took away their freedoms and finds himself in a cage after being nabbed by the FEDS on what appears to be some trumped up charges. Working behind his back to seize the zoo was a collection of barely contained beasts: Carole Fucking Baskin, Jeff Lowe, and Joe’s former friend “businessman,” James Garretson.
There is no more humanity left in Joe Exotic, as he is completely ruled by his animal instincts to self-preserve.
As Russell Crowe‘s Gladiator once said, “Are you not entertained?” That’s not even an option when it comes to Tiger King (of course you’re entertained, that’s why you’re reading a recap about the show!). It’s the most buzzed-about series to hit Netflix in quite a while. It’s our country’s favorite guilty-pleasure and diversion during these crazy times.
As we roll into Episode 6, the penultimate episode leading into the Episode 7 Series Finale, the murder-for-hire plot finally thickens. Up until now, we’ve been dropped into a world full of tigers, ex-cons, low-lives, zoos and eccentric animal trainers, where we’ve been given twist after unbelievable twist (Joe Exotic had not one but two husbands, who turn out to not even be gay???). Finally, we get to the real “true crime” chapter in the Joe Exotic story. We figure out just why he’s been giving phone interviews from inside Oklahoma’s Grady County Jail.
Just when you think things couldn’t get any weirder, Tiger King kicks into another gear. If you’ve already seen Tiger King Episode 6, you won’t mind reading on, But, if you haven’t and don’t want to be spoiled, you may want to turn back.
