Everything has changed this season for the Southern Charm cast. For the first time, they’re being forced to tackle the biggest issues in America. Whether it’s the pandemic or the issue of systemic racism, we’re going there this season. In a city like Charleston these are important conversations that are long overdue. It’s almost as if people like Kathryn Dennis are entirely unaware of the white privilege they have.
There are also many issues currently brewing among the cast that threaten to change everything. The friendship between Kathryn and Danni Baird is barely hanging on by a threat. Unless Kathryn starts making an effort to reciprocate what Danni gives her, it’s going to crumble. Another big issue is the never-ending relationship trouble between Madison LeCroy & Austen Kroll. Now that he has COVID-19 and put her son in danger, they might be on the verge of calling it quits.
Southern Charm is currently giving viewers a season shrouded in controversy. The cast is tackling the beginnings of the Coronavirus pandemic and the height of the Black Lives Matter movement that had a massive impact on society in general. And if you’re weary of either the disease of bacteria or the disease of racism, you’re out of luck because this is what was happening in Southern towns across the US.
The spotlight is on Kathryn Dennis – again. Because she has a knack for stirring things up. In the midst of the BLM wave, Kathryn engaged in a heated exchange with a Black DJ. While attempting to emphasize a point, Kathryn chose to use a monkey emoji in a comment. We all know how that turned out. Now Kathryn’s ride-or-die friend, Danni Baird, is speaking out on Kathryn’s behalf. I guess someone has to do it.
Things are getting intense for Kathryn Dennis on the latest Southern Charm episode. We’re finally to the revolting and dreaded monkey emoji moment. Viewers watched Danni Baird and Leva Bonaparte discuss how completely insane it all was. Stranger still is the fact that Kathryn went to newbie Leva for advice on the matter.
Leva has been very clear that she does not consider herself a token on the show. That said, these two really aren’t friends at all. It’s a bit strange to see Kathryn go to her for help. In fact, Leva started her time on the show pretty upset with Kathryn spreading rumors about Cameran Eubanks. Leva has also mentioned Kathryn in a few other unflattering comments. Now she’s speaking out about her feelings on Kathryn’s careless racist comments.
Kathryn Dennis seems to flit in and out of people’s lives. She blew hot and cold with baby daddy Thomas Ravenel and follows the same pattern of behavior with her friendships. It’s either a lot of involvement or silence. And Danni Baird, who has been true supporter of Kathryn’s through the seasons, has come face to face with this realization. How she processes this info and what decisions she makes will be revealed on the next episode of Southern Charm, but last week Danni was clearly hurt and disappointed.
The fallout of Kathryn’s “monkey emoji” mishap has come to a head at a sensitive time. Cast member Leva Bonaparte, speaking in tandem with Black Lives Matter, advocated for the removal of archaic statues of historical figures that advocated for slavery in Charleston. Kathryn’s ancestor was one of them. The removal of the statue did not interest Kathryn as much as trying to restore her image after the emoji news broke. So she reached out to Leva multiple times to navigate the situation. Danni felt hurt that Kathryn did not include her in the process. The reality is, Kathryn specifically needed Leva’s help to do damage control.
It’s completely surreal to be watching the early stages of the pandemic play out on Southern Charm. As we move into that, we’re going to dive into the Black Lives Matter movement as well. I kind of love this. It’s a real and raw season, and we’re showcasing the state of America. So much went down in the beginning of the lockdown, so it’s great to be able to view it in this lens.
Flashing two months later following the beginning of the pandemic is a fascinating time jump. Things are opening back up, but life is nowhere near normal. Between the social justice movements and the virus, there’s so much happening in Charleston. We’re going to get a view of where all of the guys and girls stand on these issues. Who is taking it seriously? Who is standing up for change? That’s what we’re FINALLY going to learn.
Southern Charm Season 7 started out with a lot of Cameran Eubanks-centered drama. However, Cameran quit the show by then. The one time Cam actually had a storyline that didn’t involve her casting judgment on someone else’s life, she just peaced out. She even had her close friend Leva Bonaparte who would have been in her corner if she decided to confront Kathryn Dennis.
Kathryn spread rumors that Cam’s husband Jason Wimberly was cheating on her. Instead of just denying this on the show (if it is indeed false) and putting Kathryn in her place, Cameran just stopped filming. Is that the ultimate sign of maturity? Or is it just simply an example of “when there’s smoke, there’s fire”? I guess we will never really know. Was it messy for Kathryn to spread this gossip? Hell, yes (especially if it is false). However, as the flashbacks showed, Cameran was not kind to Kathryn for many years. Does that justify what Kathryn did? No, but it’s certainly a messy situation.
Southern Charm really feels like it is missing Cameran Eubanks. She was the classy, mature one in the group who had her life organized since the series premiere. Cameran was a good friend to her cast mates, and side-stepped any conflict by simply choosing not to engage.
Despite her friendship with the cast, there was one person that Cameran always kept at arms length. Rightly so perhaps. Drama and rumors swirled around Kathryn Dennis since her involvement with Thomas Ravenel to the current season. Kathryn was also behind the rumor that Cameran’s husband Jason Wimberly was having an affair. This vicious gossip is the reason that Cameron left the show. Now, Cameran’s friend and cast successor Leva Bonaparte is sharing her opinion regarding her departure.
The Southern Charm series sure has it’s share of love triangles and failed relationships. Currently we have Thomas Ravenel, his newest baby’s mother, and Kathryn Dennis. Then there’s Austen Kroll, Madison LeCroy, and John Pringle. Honestly, none of these combinations of relationships are going to work out. But that’s not why we watch, is it?
This show has also kept viewers on their toes for the birth of three Southern Charm babies in 7 seasons. Thomas and Kathryn had their two. Shortly after they entered into an intense custody battle, and there was yet another love triangle. This time it involved the infamous Ashley Jacobs. There was also Cameran Eubanks who previously claimed she would never be ready for parenthood. Instead, she has taken motherhood by the ovaries. It’s almost impossible to say what will happen next, but that didn’t stop the current cast from placing their bets anyways!
