While several members of the Real Housewives of Orange County cast have been involved in their fair share of controversies, no housewife is more divisive than Kelly Dodd. It started with her low-blow attacks on her castmates regarding their age, appearances and more. Last year, she took it to another level when she made insensitive comments about the coronavirus pandemic and wore a hat that mocked the Black Lives Matter movement. She’s since apologized for her “stupid” comments, but even Kelly thinks she’s probably getting the boot before Season 16. But who knows, because Andy Cohen doesn’t necessarily think she’s problematic.
And now Kelly has found herself in a controversy with former Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star Lisa Vanderpump. But, somehow, LVP was the one admitting to a lie and apologizing to Kelly. I know, it’s very off-brand for these two.
Everyone has their own idea about what makes a Housewife notable. For some, it’s the cash flow. Someone like Jennifer Aydin who spends big and loves to talk about it, flaunt it, and talk about it again. For others, it’s all about the party and good times. We’re talking about the Porsha Williams and Sonja Morgans of the crew. Some like the women with a steady grind and a sense of accomplishment like Kandi Burruss, Lisa Vanderpump, or Tiffany Moon. Or just a scattered mess of pure humanity and confusing life choices. Looking at you, Ashley Darby.
Then there are the others. The Housewives that are mostly known for being notorious. Less famous than they are infamous. Some might say Vicki Gunvalson or Nene Leakes fall into this category. Of course, it’s all a matter of personal opinion. I’m sure some of you are already groaning and some of these examples because your perception of an all-star Housewife couldn’t be more different. Are there any Tre-huggers out there??
Shannon Beador is taking hits from every direction lately. While Braunwyn Windham-Burke and Kelly Dodd seem to be vying for the “most contentious” label, don’t count Shannon out! She may not be making the most noise, but there is some low-key drama happening with this one. Even if it doesn’t make its way onto Real Housewives of Orange County.
Shannon and her now ex-husband, David Beador can’t seem to get their relationship back on track. And while we all keep waiting for that rumored “fun Shannon” to appear, David seems to be living his best life. I mean he’s still a cheating loser weirdo, and his new wife seems sort of thirsty, but isn’t that his kink? David announced the pregnancy of his then fiancé, Lesley Cook back in October. Since then, they have gotten married and she has changed her name to Lesley Beador.
Braunwyn Windham-Burke really did the most during the latest Real Housewives of Orange County season… both on the show and on social media… and in interviews. It really turned into The Braunwyn Show, which many of us grew tired with.
She just seemed to do whatever she could to be seen, including hiring a professional photographer to take pictures of her at a Black Lives Matter protest. Trying to spotlight yourself during an event like that is just beyond cringe-worthy. Since then she “just happened to be photographed” while she and husband Sean Burke were walking out of a sex shop. Really? Paparazzi just happen to be following a second-season Real Housewife who lives in Orange County, California? No one believes that. Just like no one believes that the paparazzi “just happened to photograph” pictures of Braunwyn with her new girlfriend Kris. Kelly Dodd called her out for saying it was all staged, and, clearly, she’s right.
Who would you rather be friends with, Tamra Judge or Shannon Beador? Tamra has no problem stirring the pot and throwing anyone under the bus for a storyline. And, then there’s Shannon, who seems overwhelming, clingy, and demanding.
With those two choices for a friend, who would even want one?
Going into the most recent
flop of a season of Real Housewives of Orange County, a lot of viewers expected to “side” with Braunwyn Windham-Burke. She supported disenfranchised groups and she seemed to be open-minded. During the premiere episode, she revealed that she is an alcoholic and started her journey of sobriety. She had a lot of people behind her, supporting her.
Then, the tide started to turn. She hired a professional photographer to take pictures of her at a Black Lives Matter protest, which doesn’t exactly scream “sincerity.” She admitted to hitting her husband Sean Burke… multiple times… in front of their children. After that, she came out as a lesbian, claiming that she has never been attracted to her husband, the father of her seven kids. She’s also been calling the paparazzi on herself. Basically, it just feels like a lot of attention-seeking and hypocrisy. No wonder, she’s had issues with every single one of her co-stars this season.
Real Housewives of Orange County fans have seen glimpses of Kelly Dodd’s new husband Rick Leventhal on the most recent season. He wasn’t involved in any drama, but his daughter Veronica Leventhal, has been calling Kelly out. Very Publicly. After Kelly yelled “I’m Black” at the RHOC reunion, Veronica said, “I don’t think it’s okay for people who say they’ve experienced racism or prejudice to then turn around and inflict that same bigotry on other people. I don’t think you can experience the privileges of whiteness and then turn around and deny that those privileges exist.”
Veronica also said, “I don’t think that you can claim ownership on a culture or a nationality and then disallow privileges to those people, either through certain political perspectives or just subjugating them in other ways.” And, after that, she commented on her dad and new stepmom during a podcast interview. On top of that, apparently, Kelly and Rick can’t get in touch with her these days.
Is anyone still enjoying Kelly Dodd these days? While the Real Housewives of Orange County star still has some diehard stans coming to her defense on social media, it’s getting harder to find people who will stand behind her. And while she might have been previously known as a spunky shit-stirrer, she has definitely crossed over into territory that she can’t come back from.
Maybe it was all the controversial comments about the coronavirus. Sure, she tried to apologize. But in true Kelly form, those apologies felt forced, empty and fell flat. Maybe it was wearing a “Drunk Wives Matter” hat to her bridal shower. She apologized for that too but it was more of a justification for doing it in the first place. Then there was the epic declaration at the reunion that she’s Black. Her stunned castmates quickly found out that revelation was from a 23 and Me test and hardly qualified her as Black. Let alone able to claim that she understands or has experienced life as a Black woman.
