The Sex Pistols frontman and founder of Public Image Limited, John Lydon, recently expressed interest in performing a duet with Taylor Swift after previously calling her “incredibly dull.” Doing a full 180 on his criticism of the pop singer, Lyden softened his stance. He acknowledged Swift’s success and showed his willingness for a musical partnership. Despite his outspoken demeanor, Lyden’s change of opinion indicated a reflective and open-minded attitude to art and music.
Sex Pistols’ John Lydon does a 180 on Taylor Swift comment
During an interview with NME in February, Sex Pistols’ John Lydon described Taylor Swift as “dull,.” However, he recently stated he was open to collaborating with Swift on a duet. The sudden U-turn in his opinion happened during his recent interview with The Mirror. Not one to shy away from candid views, Lydon’s about-face naturally came as a surprise.
While expressing one such candid opinion during NME’s “Rock N Roll Kill Braincells?!” series, the punk icon did not mince words about Swift’s music. He stated, “There’s a whole history of that kind of singer in America: the pop teenage trivia thing.” Continuing the criticism, Lydon added, “What she’s grown into is too elaborate and she’s trapped by not meaning to annoy her fanbase.”
The rebellious artist further prophesied, “She’s got no place to go, so it’s gone into swishy ballroom-gown vibe.” He added Swift would end up “in Vegas, because that’s the only place left and that’s no future at all.”
However, only a few months later, Lydon showed a change in tune. Talking praise of the “Cruel Summer” singer, Lydon told The Mirror, “Those that do that kind of music, like Taylor, they do it very well.” He further proposed, “She deserves a go at me. Imagine that duet?”
This change of opinion has supposedly come with his openness to new collaborations in light of his upcoming tour with Public Image Ltd. During the interview, the frontman recounted a failed attempt to collaborate with Kate Bush. Whether or not Swift takes Lydon up on his offer is a matter of time. Given stranger collaborations that have happened in the industry, it would not be a total surprise.
