Charli xcx reveals she is down for her next record to ‘be a flop’
After the success of her album “Brat,” Charli xcx revealed she was down for her next record to be a failure. While the music industry obsesses over success, the “Guess” singer’s frank take offered a refreshing perspective. Speaking with CULTED on Magnum Beach in Cannes, the artist said she was perfectly content if her next album doesn’t make it to the charts.
Charli discussed the unexpected success of “Brat,” admitting, “I don’t really feel the pressure to create another record like Brat because when I was making it, even though I really believed in it and totally knew what I wanted to do with it, I had no idea how it would be received.” She added that she valued the authenticity of the creative process while making the album, and appreciated that she created it for herself.
When asked about the challenge of making another “Zeitgeist-defining album,” Charli replied she did not put the pressure of replicating Brat’s success. Responding in a direct manner, she confessed: “I don’t really feel the pressure because I feel that you can never really do the same thing twice and my next record will probably be a flop which I’m down for to be honest.”
By embracing the potential failure of her future album, the “party 4 u” singer clarified she valued artistic freedom over guaranteed hits. Thus, for Charli xcx, mimicking the success that “Brat” brought her is not the purpose she wants to drag into her next record. Her focus remains on the ability to create music she resonates with, underscoring the confidence that goes beyond chart numbers.
