Miley Cyrus reveals ‘polyp on vocal cord’ contributes largely to her sound
Miley Cyrus appeared on the May 21 episode of “The Zane Lowe Show” and opened up about the story behind the unique sound of her voice. The revelation came while the 32-year-old singer touched on “how taxing physical live performance is.” During the conversation, Cyrus told the host, Zane Lowe, that she “had the Reinke’s edema.” The former Disney star explained, “It’s abuse of the vocal cords.”
Cyrus continued to share, “Being 21 and staying up and drinking and smoking and partying after every show does not help.” However, she added, “In my case, it does not cause it.” She then noted that her voice “always sounded like this” and that the sound is “a part” of her “unique anatomy.” The singer further shared, “I have this very large, you know, polyp on my vocal cord, which has given me a lot of the tone and the texture that has made me who I am.”
However, Cyrus noted it has also been “extremely difficult to perform with.” The “Flowers” hitmaker explained, “It’s like running a marathon with ankle weights on.” Cyrus continued to share that it even reflects when she’s “talking sometimes.” The actor candidly told the host, “At the end of the day, you know, I’ll call my mom and she’ll go, ‘Oh, you sound like you’re talking through a radio.'” She added that’s how one can “tell” that she’s “really tired” because it creates the “ultimate vocal fry.”
Nonetheless, Miley Cyrus continued to call it a “blessing of a condition,” despite admitting that her voice makes it difficult for her to go unnoticed at public places.
