After seven long years, Cardi B finally announced her sophomore album. Her debut record, Invasion of Privacy, broke records and earned her a Grammy. Since then, she’s had three kids and broken up with her baby daddy more times than we can count.
On Monday, June 23, she confirmed the name of the long-awaited release, which will feature hit songs from her seven-year hiatus like WAP, Outside, and Up. It’s an exciting time to be a Cardi fan, but it’s the album’s title that caught the attention of RuPaul’s Drag Race fans.
Cardi B references Drag Race’s Scarlet Envy for her new album
Cardi B’s new album is called Am I The Drama? Drag Race fans will remember that phrase from All Stars 6, when Scarlet Envy made the comment that turned into a mega viral trend. During her Meet the Queens intro, she famously said, “Am I the drama?” The rest is history.
Scarlet asked, “Is it me? Am I the drama? I don’t think I’m the drama… maybe I am. Am I the villain? I don’t think I’m the villain.”
So, is this a coincidence, or is Cardi pulling from Scarlet? According to her reps, it’s a little bit of both.
Cardi’s album title is poking fun at all of the headlines that have surrounded her life since her first album: an altercation with Nicki Minaj, a multimillion dollar lawsuit against a blogger, and throwing a microphone at someone’s head in the middle of a performance, just to name a few. Cardi really is the drama, and her reps told Entertainment Weekly that she has nothing but love for Scarlet.
“While Cardi’s album inspiration comes from her real-life drama, she loves Scarlet Envy and they’re in talks to work together soon,” her rep told the outlet.
RuPaul’s Drag Race is streaming on Paramount+, and Am I the Drama? is out on September 19.
