Dr. Terry Dubrow makes a prolific living as a prominent Beverly Hills plastic surgeon. But as he spends so much of his time repairing the work of other surgeons, he knows how quickly things can go south. Viewers have seen the examples of horrific surgical outcomes on his show, Botched.
So when one of the four children he shares with Real Housewives of Orange County star Heather Dubrow came to him about getting her lips done, he discouraged her.
“I go, ‘Uh, no,'” Terry remembered. “And they go, ‘Really? Really?'”
Dr. Terry Dubrow’s thoughts might surprise fans
“It’s hard to be a busy plastic surgeon who puts food on the table doing this, and to say to your kids, ‘No, it’s okay for everybody else, but not for you,'” he told E! News.
As a self-described “accepting, permissive father,” Terry urges his children to really think it through before doing anything permanent.
“The way Heather and I handle this is, we go, ‘Okay, let’s talk about that,'” Terry added. “And they go, ‘Oh, here we go. Mom and Dad are going to make us talk about it.'”
“Because the last thing we want you to do is be regretful,” Terry explained. “To look back and say to us, ‘Why didn’t you make me work this out?'”
“I am open to my kids making the appropriate changes,” said Terry. “If they had a bad nose, I would be the first to say, ‘Sure, but what are you hoping to gain?'”
So the first thing he does with his patients looking for a more natural look is to talk it out. In fact, that’s exactly how he started with Real Housewives of Atlanta alum Kim Zolciak. On his new show, Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind, before he picks up a scalpel, he talks everything out with his patients.
So when one of his kids approaches him about surgery, his first thought is to not be a jerk. “Act like there are cameras around and you’re going to be held accountable for the way you act,” he advises. “That immediately removes [any] preconceived doucheyness you might have.”
Meanwhile, “Give your kids a supportive, loving environment,” he added. “That’s the perfect place to start.”
Botched Presents: Plastic Surgery Rewind premieres July 9 at 10/9c on E!
