Next Gen NYC Has a Fan in Former First Lady Michelle Obama

Millions of people tuned into Season 1 of Next Gen NYC, and apparently, Michelle Obama was one of them. The former First Lady of the United States has always been open about her love for reality TV, but she just gave the world a reminder that she’s a Bravo girlie like the rest of us. During a recent episode of her IMO podcast, she dished on Real Housewives, Next Gen NYC, and everything in between.

Michelle Obama points out the similarities between Real Housewives and sports

In the July 30 episode of IMO, Michelle and her brother/co-host invited Matt Rogers and Bowen Yang for a sit-down. Of course, the Las Culturistas hosts connected with her over reality TV, and Michelle said she’s a fan of “all of it,” including Bravo’s surprise hit, Next Gen NYC.

She said, “I watched the first two episodes. I’m just like, ‘Oh, they’re starting the babies off early. Oh my god.’”

We’re hopeful that she gets around to watching the rest of the season, but the former FLOTUS explained that Barack Obama gives her grief about her love for unscripted TV. He thinks sports are more interesting, but Michelle said she doesn’t see a huge difference between them.

“You know, this is where I want to educate my brother and even my husband, who will be listening,” Michelle began. “Culture is king. I mean, the truth is, they razz me about my love of reality TV and the Real Housewives.”

The Las Culturistas hosts didn’t realize that there was just as much drama in sports media as there is in the reality TV world. Michelle spoke as an expert on both. Whether it’s Next Gen NYC, The Real Housewives of Atlanta, or First Take on ESPN, it all boils down to the same mess.

“You know, if I listen to ESPN for an hour, it’s like watching The Real Housewives of Atlanta,” Michelle explained. “I mean, you know, it’s the same drama, and they’re yelling at each other, and they don’t get along.”

She continued, “It’s just sociological drama. I mean, the fact that people over seasons of working together, still can’t get along. They still have the same arguments, you know, and it’s not just women, but this happens in sports, too. I find it fascinating.”

She’s right. It is fascinating. Will this comparison convince Barack to sit down and watch Next Gen NYC with his wife? That’s still to be determined.

Next Gen NYC is streaming on Peacock and Hayu in the UK and Ireland.
