Like many women in the 90s, Sarah Ferguson had a “schoolgirl crush” on John F. Kennedy Jr. and was determined to meet him. Andrew Lownie’s new book Entitled: The Rise and Fall of the House of York includes a lot of gossip about the Duchess of York and her ex-husband Prince Andrew. The bombshell book covers their scandals, including her notorious debts. It also shines a light on Fergie’s celebrity crushes like Kevin Costner, Tiger Woods, and George Clooney. But JFK Jr. held a special place in her heart.
Sarah Ferguson was allegedly jealous when Princess Diana met JFK Jr.
According to an excerpt in People, Fergie was overjoyed to discover she and JFK Jr. were in New York at the same time. She invited him to have drinks, despite his publicized relationship with actress Daryl Hannah. “‘That’s not going to bother me!” the Duchess reportedly said. Out of respect to his girlfriend, JFK Jr. said he was busy. According to Lownie, “Staff were then ordered to spy on his apartment all night to check that he had told the truth.”
Daryl Hannah wasn’t the only woman Fergie was reportedly jealous of. The book also alleges that she was “furious” Princess Diana met JFK Jr. before her. Lownie claims she exclaimed, “‘He’s mine! Why can’t she just leave him alone?'”
Princess Diana briefly met up with JFK Jr. in New York over Christmas in 1995. Per RoseMarie Terenzino and Liz MacNeil’s book JFK JR: An Intimate Oral Biography, “Diana wanted it to be discreet because it had all the makings of a great gossip story.” Diana wasn’t trying to start a relationship. But “she was curious to meet him. Partly, I think because Sarah Ferguson had the hots for him and Diana wanted to, I think, do one up on her.” Sounds like that plan worked!
While she didn’t get to meet him, Fergie would talk about JFK Jr. all the time. A close friend of hers said, “‘It’s incredibly real to her, like a schoolgirl crush.'” Her nickname for him was reportedly “Number Nine,” meaning “his place in the order of her lovers.” Wonder if she’ll be tuning into that upcoming Ryan Murphy series about JFK Jr.?
