Trent Sweeney, the brother of actress Sydney Sweeney, has weighed in on the growing backlash to her recent American Eagle campaign.

The 25-year-old U.S. Air Force member, who was recently promoted to staff sergeant, shared the news on Instagram this week. Posting a photo of his promotion certificate to his Stories, he captioned it, “It’s them good jeans.” The remark appears to reference the tagline that has fueled criticism of Sydney’s advertisement.

Trent followed with a more formal post on his main page, showing himself in uniform at the ceremony and expressing gratitude to those who had supported him throughout his career. His caption read, “I’m excited for this next step in my career and thank everyone that’s been a part of it so far.” The Euphoria star showed her support by liking the post.

The exchange comes as Sydney Sweeney faces criticism for her American Eagle advertisements, which were launched under the line “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” Many social media users have argued that the wording is an intentional pun on “genes” and carries racial overtones. Some have accused the brand of using the slogan to promote white supremacist ideas.

One of the videos further intensified the backlash. In the promotional video, Sydney is shown approaching a billboard that initially reads, “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Genes.” She then replaces the word “Genes” with “Jeans” before walking away.

Though the actress has remained silent, American Eagle issued a public statement defending its approach. The brand wrote, “This campaign is and always was about the jeans. Her jeans. Her narrative.”

The controversy has also drawn the attention of President Donald Trump, who described the ad as “fantastic” after learning that Sydney is a registered Republican voter.
