How Princess Diana Would Have Handled Prince William and Prince Harry Rift — Report

On July 16, Prince Harry visited a minefield in Angola in memory of his mother Princess Diana. Nearly 30 years ago, Diana made it her mission to rid the world of those mines that were killing and maiming the innocent.

Just two weeks earlier, Harry’s older brother Prince William observed what would have been their mother’s 64th birthday in Sheffield, England. In addition to being Diana’s birthday, July 1 marked the second anniversary of Homewards, Will’s mission to end homelessness. The plight of the unhoused was another issue the former Princess of Wales introduced her sons to.

Though the brothers once stood side by side to observe their late mother’s birthday, they now do so separately. Once close, they no longer communicate with each other.

As the 28th anniversary of Diana’s death approaches, Diana’s boys remain estranged from each other.

“We all remember the days when Harry and William were joshing with one another, and it all seemed set for their relationship and the future,” Diana’s biographer Andrew Morton told People. “It’s a great loss for the monarchy.”

When they were just small boys, Diana used to imagine that Harry would always be his brother’s “wingman.” Together they faced their parents’ scandalous divorce, as well as the sudden death of their mother in a Paris car crash on August 31, 1997. They were only 15 and 12 at the time.

But things changed after Harry fell in love and married American actress Meghan Markle in 2018. When Harry and Meghan decided to step back from their royal duties in 2020 and move to America, the feud became public.

Things worsened after the couple’s shocking 2021 interview with Oprah Winfrey. When Harry released his book Spare in 2023, the rift only deepened. His brother wasn’t happy that Harry exposed personal family arguments, sometimes described as being physical.

“Some members of my family will never forgive me,” Harry confessed sadly in May.

Even though deeply estranged from each other, Diana’s influence on their early lives still shapes them. Each of them have created families in which their children are the central focus. They’re raising their offspring with genuine love and affection, while instilling an awareness and sense of responsibility for the world around them. That’s a direct reflection of the way their mother raised them.

Hopefully, their deep connection and shared love for Diana will someday bring them back together. She always meant for Harry to be a support for his older brother, who’s now only a heartbeat away from the throne.

“There is no doubt Diana would have tried to act as a peacemaker between them,” Andrew Morton added. “If she had been around, they would have worked things out.”
