Emily in Paris Assistant Director Diego Borella Dies After Collapsing During Filming

After collapsing on the set of Netflix hit show Emily in Paris, assistant director Diego Borella has passed away. Though medics arrived on the scene on August 21, sadly, they were unable to revive him.

Shooting scenes for Season 5 of the popular show, the crew was filming at the Hotel Danieli in Venice, Italy, when Diego suddenly collapsed. The 47-year-old is believed to have suffered a heart attack.

The Venice health service said in a statement, “Our ambulance arrived at 6:42 p.m. Medics made attempts to resuscitate him. But in the end all efforts proved fruitless. At around 7:30 p.m., he was pronounced deceased.”

While filming for the season’s final episode was halted following Diego’s sudden death, production reportedly resumed two days later. According to Page Six, the assistant director had been scheduled to direct the final scene of the season.

Born in Venice, Diego had worked in London, New York and Rome. According to Italian outlets, he was also know to write poetry, children’s stories, and fairy tales, in addition to his film work.

Prior to the AD’s sudden death, the show’s star Lily Collins teased Season 5 with some behind-the-scenes content on her Instagram. “Joy ride to and from work with the best …” she captioned a photo carousel with co-star Ashley Park.

Premiering in 2020, Emily in Paris follows the romantic adventures of Emily Cooper. Lily plays Cooper, an American advertising professional who gets a dream job with a French agency.

In the synopsis for Season 5, Emily faces even more complications in her already complicated love life. “Now the head of Agence Grateau Rome, Emily faces professional and romantic challenges as she adapts to life in a new city,” the synopsis reads. “But just as everything falls into place, a work idea backfires, and the fallout cascades into heartbreak and career setbacks. Seeking stability, Emily leans into her French lifestyle, until a big secret threatens one of her closest relationships.”

Season 5 of Emily in Paris is set to premiere in mid-December 2025. Maybe Lily will be able to get her Something About Her sandwich by then.
