Sabrina Carpenter shares her views on Man’s Best Friend album cover
Sabrina Carpenter recently spoke with Zane Lowe following the release of her newest album, Man’s Best Friend. She addressed the controversy surrounding the album cover that sparked major backlash.
The pop star clarified that the hair pull was never intentional. She had photographed multiple men trying to play with her hair. Carpenter explained, “I wanted a man playing with my hair. And I actually used maybe five different men to take that photo because none of them could play with my hair.” She added, “They were all pulling it like they were all nervous to be holding my hair, and so the grip looked like they were yanking it.”
Describing her intent, the Espresso singer said, “The whole purpose of the photo was supposed to be cheeky, airy & playful.” She shared that the cover was meant to convey her emotions and personal experiences. “I got myself here, here I am, this is someone I love, but also someone that emotionally can be doing a lot with my heart and doing a lot with my emotions,” she told Lowe.
Standing by the cover art, Carpenter explained that it captured exactly what she was looking for. “The photo we landed on was so special,” she told Lowe. She noted that it was the only picture that managed to reflect the lighting she wanted while also showing control in her facial expression, “even though I’m on all fours.” She concluded, “and to me, it was just perfect.”
The cover art features Carpenter on all fours in a black mini dress and heels. Meanwhile, a man, cropped out of the frame, appears to be pulling on her hair. The image immediately sparked debate online, with many accusing it of being provocative.
