Sydney Sweeney Might Score a Win Amid Jeans Ad Controversy

Sydney Sweeney drew attention at a major film festival as she stepped out to promote her latest project, Christy. The actress used the moment to highlight her demanding new role. She also made it clear she would not discuss a recent ad controversy.

Sydney Sweeney’s new movie gets positive reviews

Several top critics praised Sydney Sweeney’s performance as transformative and committed, while others pointed to weaknesses in the film’s overall execution.

According to Pete Hammond of Deadline, “Sweeney delivers, and then some, putting her all into this sometimes extremely dark tale.” Owen Gleiberman of Variety noted that the film’s effectiveness comes from simply telling Christy Martin’s story, “allowing the heroism to rise up out of it.”

Johnny Oleksinski of the New York Post described Sweeney as “a knockout” and added that Christy marks “a major step to showing there’s much more to her than rom and com.” Kate Erbland of IndieWire observed that Sweeney “disappears into the role, not just changing her hair color, eye color, accent, and way of moving, but her general air.” David Fear of Rolling Stone called the film “a decent movie, and a way better proof-of-concept regarding Sweeney’s willingness to go the distance for a project.”

At the same time, critics also noted shortcomings. Caryn James of BBC.com wrote that Sweeney’s “own high-profile celebrity makes it difficult to believe her as the character.” David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter described the film as “stubbornly unaffecting,” while Benjamin Lee of The Guardian said the film leaves viewers barely feeling the impact of Christy Martin’s life. Nick Schager of The Daily Beast characterized it as “so rote that even an A.I. wouldn’t dare try to pass it off as original.”

First screenings show a split decision. Some reviews highlight Christy as a strong showcase for Sweeney’s acting range. Others say the sports biopic feels weighed down by convention. The mixed but positive notices suggest the movie could be a small win for Sweeney’s career.
