A movie about drag queens, outrageous characters, and scandalous antics — probably not the sort of film you’d expect a royal to enjoy. However, the Rocky Horror Picture Show apparently has fans in all kinds of places. Tim Curry has revealed that Princess Diana had not only seen the movie, but learnt a lot from it.
Princess Diana said Rocky Horror “completed” her education
This year marks the 50th anniversary of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. To celebrate the event, CBS Sunday Morning spoke with several of the movie’s cast and creatives about its legacy. One particularly interesting tidbit from an interview with Tim Curry revealed that Princess Diana was a fan.
The legendary actor revealed that Prince Charles and Princess Diana attended a show he was starring in. While meeting him backstage, Diana asked, “You were in The Rocky Horror Show, weren’t you?” He replied, “Yes, I was. But I don’t suppose you saw it,” to which Diana shot back, “Of course I did – it quite completed my education.”
Tim previously spoke about the incident on the Fresh Air radio show. He said of Diana’s delivery of the final line: “She was a very funny girl, and a very beautiful one and sort of the – a very wicked smile came with that sentence. She was great fun.” He also revealed that Princess Margaret went to see the Rocky Horror theater show and “had a wonderful time”.
Tim sadly suffered a stroke in 2012 that has left him with mobility issues and needing to use a wheelchair. His speech was also affected, though he has managed to continue doing voice work, including in the Star Wars: The Clone Wars animated series.
Princess Diana was known for her progressive views and down-to-earth attitude. Some say she would’ve handled the rift between her sons with ease.
