Madonna Declined Presenting Lady Gaga With VMA for a Reason, Source Claims

Madonna and Lady Gagas alleged rivalry made headlines once again. According to a recent report, the 2025 MTV VMAs were supposed to have a memorable moment that would have gone down in history. Reportedly, the event producers wanted the 67-year-old to present an award to the “Die With a Smile” singer. However, a source claimed that Madonna declined the offer.

Madonna ‘wasn’t interested’ in presenting Lady Gaga with VMA amid existing tension, source claims

Madonna and Lady Gaga have been seen as rivals in public since the 2011 feud involving their songs, “Born This Way” and “Express Yourself.” Hence, whenever the two queens of pop are set to attend the same event, people become curious. Amid this existing tension, the “Frozen” singer was reportedly asked to present an award to the 39-year-old at the MTV VMAs.

An insider told Rob Shuter’s #ShuterScoop that the producers of the award ceremony were “desperate” to bring both artists on stage. They believed that Madonna “handing the trophy to Gaga” would be an “iconic” moment. “But Madonna wasn’t interested,” they added.

Another source claimed that there might be “still tension there.” Allegedly, the senior celebrity didn’t want to create any passing-the-torch moment. “They’ve had their ups and downs, and Madonna wasn’t going to play into the narrative that she was blessing Gaga. That’s not how Madonna works,” they mentioned.

Although the two women have not addressed their rivalry publicly, people around them felt that Madonna didn’t want to be overshadowed. She’s aware of Gaga’s popularity and doesn’t want to be “anyone’s supporting act,” according to a longtime music insider.

Meanwhile, Gaga, who already owns 18 VMAs, won four awards at the event this year. She bagged the Artist of the Year title, beating Taylor Swift and Beyoncé. She also received awards for Best Direction and Best Art Direction for “Abracadabra.” Furthermore, Best Collaboration for her duet with Bruno Mars in “Die With a Smile” also went to her.
