Liam and Gabriella both ended their relationships with their former partners in 2019. Allegedly, Matty was a bit of a party animal, which made their relationship hard for Gabriella to endure. As for Liam and Miley, their goals and lifestyles reportedly grew further apart as the days of their very short-lived marriage passed. Several months after these relationships ended, Liam and Gabriella started dating.
Matty and Miley have each moved on with new partners. But, like all good life stories, there were some messy moments attached to their former timelines. Here is a quick refresher of these three relationships, so that you can see what we mean.

Following six years of dating, Gabriella has just revealed her engagement to Liam. Turns out, the odds were ever in her favor. The same goes for Liam, because Gabriella is a stunning Australian model.
On Friday, September 12, 2005, Gabriella posted a series of three images to Instagram. In the first image, Gabriella stands behind Liam, wrapping her left arm, now adorned with an engagement ring, around his shoulders. The second and third images feature a peaceful ocean setting, followed by a shot that only features her left hand and ring finger resting on a sheet, showcasing her new massive sparkler.
In the caption, Gabriella inserted only a white heart. Who needs words when you have a Liam, right? Liam and Gabriella actually first sparked wedding rumors last month, after photographers spotted Gabriella wearing a diamond ring on that finger while holidaying near a yacht dock in Ibiza, Spain.
As for their beginnings, Liam and Gabriella started strong, since their first spotted image showed Liam already lunching with Gabriella and his parents in 2019. Then, during the COVID-19 pandemic, Liam and Gabriella quarantined together in Byron Bay, Australia. Wanting to keep their relationship private following their unrelated headline-inducing splits from their previous partners, the only other updates they shared from then to now are a few family and friend snaps, alongside a smaller handful of coupled-up posts.

This engagement marks the second time that Liam has slid an engagement ring onto someone’s hand. The first time happened in 2012, when Liam proposed to his on-again, off-again then-girlfriend, Miley.
Liam and Miley met on the set of The Last Song in 2009. Shortly after filming wrapped on this film, their relationship took off. But in August of the following year, they parted ways. Likely feeling a case of seller’s remorse, however, these two had already reunited by the very next month.
Nevertheless, their reunion only lasted a handful of weeks. At some unknown point, however, these ill-fitting boomerangs returned to each other, because in May of 2012, Liam proposed to Miley, who happily accepted his ask. In keeping with their trends, however, they called off their engagement in 2013, only to get engaged once again in 2016.
Liam finally married Miley on December 12, 2018, but their sealed deal failed to stop any lurking wrecking balls from entering their lives. In August of 2019, they filed for a divorce.
Recently, Miley looked back on their timelines, admitting that their first split fell during the making of her Bangerz album. “I was this provocateur, and it was, like, highly sexualized,” which Liam loathed. When detailing their second engagement, Miley explained that she was making her Younger Now album. Here, she “played into this innocence” that Liam appreciated.
Gabriella Brooks’ history with Matty Healy
Like her new fiancé, Liam, Gabriella also has a famous past love interest via Matty. Matty is the lead singer for the British pop-rock band, The 1975. He also writes the majority of their songs, which Gabriella presumably no longer listens to. But, with his history of tone-deaf comments, alongside his shock-value-styled performances while on various stages with his band, this controversial singer likely cares very little about having one less fanatic in Gabriella.
Gabriella and Matty dated from 2015 to 2019. Their split reportedly came once Gabriella realized that she could no longer tolerate his party-filled lifestyle. And yes, this reasoning sounds incredibly similar to how Liam felt with Miley.
In a 2020 interview with The Guardian, Matty showed a shimmer of growth by acknowledging his shortcomings as a boyfriend. “My 20s were f*cking chaos, and I didn’t live a domestic life, so there are lots of things I’ve just not learned,” he said, admitting, “I’m not emotionally very mature. There have been times when it has damaged my relationships, and I ask myself, ‘Why do I value my career so much?’ I’m trying to relinquish that idea,” he confessed.
Matty has since moved on with his now-fiancée, Gabbriette Bechtel.
