Dreamgirls Broadway Revival Sparks Social Media Excitement

Fans are in dreamland with news that a popular musical is returning to Broadway.

The original run of Dreamgirls premiered on Broadway in 1981 and remained there for nearly four years before closing.

Its success spawned numerous world tours and the show was adapted into a movie in 2006. That film grossed over $150 million at the box office. The original run of the production won multiple Tony and Grammy Awards.

At long last, fans will have another chance to see the musical on Broadway.

News of a Dreamgirls return to the bright lights of New York City has fans buzzing and eager to see it live.

“dreamgirls returning to broadway omg lemme get some of my clients on the phone….” said one one fan.

“Thank you Lord for hearing my prayers,” rejoiced another excited to see the show.

Camille A. Brown will direct and choreograph the Dreamgirls revival. Camille was nominated for multiple Tony Awards in the past for her work on shows like Choir Boy and Gypsy.

While the show will be under a new director, it will retain its original songbook, with lyrics by the late Tom Eyen. The music by Henry Krieger, meanwhile, will also remain intact.  For those who aren’t familiar, the show was based on the show business aspirations and successes of numerous R&B acts, including James Brown, The Shirelles, Jackie Wilson, and the Supremes.

The musical includes hit songs like Dreamgirls, plus And I am Telling You I’m not Going. Jennifer Holliday a Grammy Award for Best Female R&B Vocal Performance in 1983 for the latter. The movie version saw former American Idol contestant Jennifer Hudson win an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress.

In December 2021, the show embarked on a UK tour, visiting over 20 venues within 15 months. Currently, they are hosting a global casting call for various roles. Open auditions are happening around the world, including in New York City, Paris, and London.

The revival will open on Broadway in the fall of 2026.
