Jason Momoa Reveals He Almost Drowned; And What Saved Him

He may look like the ultimate action hero, but even Aquaman is no match for Mother Nature. Jason Momoa recently opened up about his terrifying ordeal in Hawaii that nearly led to his death. But one thing gave him enough strength to keep pushing to safety – and it made us love him even more.

Jason Momoa almost gave in and drowned, until he thought of his daughter

We all know the ocean can be a dangerous place, but sometimes it takes a near-death experience to really drive the point home. Just ask Jason Momoa. The actor stared death straight in the face while vacationing in Hawaii.

Back in 2007, the Dune star was enjoying some downtime on Maui. He was surfing with a friend when he suddenly became trapped by giant waves. He told Radar Online: “We paddled like 13 miles down the coast. I’m probably half a mile at that point offshore. And it’s actually this place is called ‘Stfks’ because there’s all this water that pulls out of a channel there … you just get hit with these waves.”

He continued: “I was stuck in this crazy spot. I had my paddle and I was waving it [but my buddies] couldn’t see me, and the waves were so big.”

It was then that a familiar face came to mind, and it led him to keep going. He revealed he thought of daughter Lola Iolani, who was a baby at the time. “I just lost it,” he said.

Jason soldiered on. He recounted: “My feet are covered in blood, and I’m just literally [with] my ancestors just paddling the rest of this way, head down.”

He eventually made it to shore. And there was one positive – the actor previously revealed how the ordeal caused him to quit smoking.
