Robert Redford, star of Hollywood classic films like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and All the President’s Men has passed away at the age of 89. The actor and director died in his sleep in his home in Utah.
Robert Redford was one of the defining movie stars of the 1970s. He was a quintessential leading man. He could easily vacillate between Hollywood mainstream films and independent cinema, which he could later champion with the creation of the Sundance Film Festival. His movies and advocacies touched many, and the internet has come together to grieve the Hollywood legend.

At present Robert’s cause of death has not been revealed. But fans, colleagues, and media outlets alike are sharing posts and stories in honor of the late multi-award-winning actor, director, and activist.
Writer and editor Bonnie Stiernberg shared a delightful throwback photo of Robert Redford to commemorate the actor’s passing. She wrote, “Unfortunately, no one will ever look cooler than Robert Redford playing ping-pong with Paul Newman.”
Actress Marlee Matlin thanked him for his contribution to independent film. She posted a photo on X with the caption, “Our little film CODA came to the attention of everyone because of Sundance. And Sundance happened because of Robert Redford. A genius has passed. RIP Robert.”
Broadcaster Piers Morgan also shared his thoughts in an X post. He said, “RIP Robert Redford, 89. One of the all-time great movie stars. A true Hollywood legend who starred in so many of my favorite films: Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Strong, The Way We Were, All the President’s Men. What a career, what an actor, what a sad loss.”
And many fans of Robert Redford’s work also paid tribute online. They wished him wellwith RIP posts and posts highlighting their favorite parts he played. Posts included his portrayal from Hubble in The Way We Were to his beautiful personification of Death in The Twilight Zone.
A particularly touching X post by a film writer Molly said, “I hope Robert Redford died peacefully and was something akin to the episode of The Twilight Zone where he played a version of death who makes an older woman’s death a peaceful transition to the next phase of life.”
Robert Redford’s passing is among several celebrity deaths in 2025. Other celebrities who’ve passed include Hulk Hogan who passed from cardiac arrest and Val Kilmer who passed from pneumonia to name a few.
