The internet had mixed reactions to the news that Luigi Mangione has had two charges against him thrown out. Following the results of a court hearing on Tuesday, people took to social media to voice their opinions. Some celebrated his exoneration, while others questioned the decision.
Luigi Mangione had two top charges against him dismissed
Luigi Mangione’s case has left the internet divided. His alleged killing of United HealthCare boss Brian Thompson last December led to both applause and outrage. So it’s not surprising that this latest news has split opinions online.
At his latest court hearing on Tuesday, a judge dismissed his two top charges; first-degree murder and second-degree murder. He is still facing charges of second-degree murder charge and a federal murder charge.
The decision was met with celebration with some, including fans who had gathered outside the courthouse. One commentator wrote on X: “So the terrorist label was cap… but y’all still won’t admit you rushed to villainize him ?”
Another pointed out: “Charges dropped ≠ innocence. Still a long road ahead.”
Some commenters expressed dismay at the decision. One person asked: “How can it possibly be 2nd degree considering the premeditation involved? Wtf?”
Regarding the decision to drop the two top charges, which relate to terrorism, the judge said “the evidence put forth was legally insufficient”, per the Guardian.
The defense also argued that his case should be thrown out due to double jeopardy – being tried twice for the same crime – since he faced murder charges in both state and federal court. The judge, however, disagreed.
Luigi is set to return to court on 1 December. If found guilty of the remaining charges against him he will face a sentence of 25 years to life in prison.
The more recent fatal shooting of right-wing influencer Charlie Kirk has also attracted fierce debate online.
