Robert Redford, the legendary actor behind Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, died on September 16 at the age of 89. He had a long and successful career in the entertainment industry. From acting to directing, Robert did it all. Outside of acting, he was often donating to charities and was an activist for issues close to his heart.
His publicist, Cindi Berger, confirmed his passing in a heartfelt statement. “Robert Redford passed away on September 16, 2025, at his home at Sundance in the mountains of Utah–the place he loved, surrounded by those he loved. He will be missed greatly.” She added that at this time, his family is seeking privacy.
His family is now preparing to lay him to rest and has been given a strict request from the late actor for his funeral plans.
Robert Redford wanted a simple funeral

After passing away in his sleep at his beloved Utah home, Robert wanted a very specific request met for his funeral. Further, he wasn’t looking for giant fanfare. He wanted only his family to be in attendance. There will be no public service for the late actor. Additionally, only his wife, Sibylle, his daughters, Shauna and Amy, and his seven grandchildren will be in attendance. The low-key ceremony will occur in the place he loved most: Sundance, Utah.
“There won’t be a parade of A-listers. That was his nightmare. He wanted peace, not pomp,” an insider told Radar Online.
Robert renamed Sundance, Utah, after his famous character. He would go on to kickstart the Sundance Film Festival, along with the Sundance Channel and Studios.
His memorial service will be perfectly Robert. On his Sundance home away from Hollywood, he said, “That’s why I bought the land in Utah. It was a retreat where I would go away so I could have time with nature and raise my family, and not ever get tied into that. But it hasn’t been easy.”
Robert’s funeral will be reserved only for family and far away from Hollywood folks, just as he wished.
