Kevin Costner Offered Princess Diana a Role in the Canceled Bodyguard Sequel

Performing in A-list movies could have been in the cards for Princess Diana.

According to an autobiography released by her butler, Paul Burrell, the late Princess of Wales was approached by Kevin Costner to star in a new film years ago. Kevin starred in The Bodyguard and wanted Diana to be his leading lady for the sequel.

The original movie featuring Kevin and Whitney Houston collected over $400 million at the box office.

Although she had no prior acting experience, it seems Kevin’s powers of persuasion enticed the Princess to join the cast initially.

In his book The Royal Insider, Paul said after a phone conversation between Diana and Kevin, the Academy Award-winning director offered her a role. “He promised it would be tastefully done and he would look after her,” said the butler about the movie. Fittingly, Diana was supposed to play a Princess in the movie.

According to Kevin, she originally agreed to come on board. “My life’s about to change,” Kevin says she told him. When they spoke again, Kevin claimed they agreed on a kissing scene.

In the end, though, the Princess chose to stick with her royal duties rather than a glamorous Hollywood career. While Kevin sincerely wanted her in the film, Paul claims that she felt “it is entirely impossible” for her to be a part of it.

The plot of The Bodyguard II was something Diana had plenty of familiarity with. Kevin was to be protecting the Princess from stalkers and paparazzi before their relationship blossomed.

The idea of a sequel to The Bodyguard emerged when Kevin and Diana travelled to China, along with the Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson. The first draft of The Bodyguard II was finished the day before Diana’s death. However, following her tragic passing, the film was scrapped.

The Royal Insider was released earlier this month.
