What kind of a sick person writes fake death posts about someone who’s actually fighting for her life? That’s exactly what is happening to Season 17 Bachelorette Katie Thurston, as she battles stage 4 breast cancer.
She says she feels “helpless” to do anything about the false rumors circulating on social media. “I’ve seen this [Facebook] article go around before,” the Bachelor alum wrote on her Instagram Stories on September 26. “But something about tonight really f*cking pisses me off.”
Katie Thurston feels “helpless” as fake death stories continue to circulate on social media
“It was triggering,” Katie added. “I tried to report it [but] there’s nothing I can do … I just feel helpless. I’m so mad right now.”
Ironically, Katie had planned to take a break from social media before she learned about the article reporting her false demise. “I was getting, like, texts from people I don’t normally hear from,” she explained. “Then I got DMs from people, and everyone’s like, ‘Are you OK?’”
In a follow-up to her original Story, the Washington native continued, “[I’m] still here. [Facebook] is just constant clickbait … Please report these people. They suck!! This is so triggering.”
Katie, who previously underwent a lumpectomy at the age of 20, first announced her cancer diagnosis in February. At the time, her doctors diagnosed her with stage 3 breast cancer, but she insisted she was “ready to fight.”
Furthermore, she added that she was facing “appointments for another biopsy, fertility, mental health, surgery, as well as meeting with my team to discuss the overall treatment plan, which will include chemo.”
In March, the reality TV personality shared that she had been diagnosed with stage 4 cancer, after cancer cells were discovered in her liver.
But just a couple of months after getting married, Katie shared that she was experiencing “medically induced menopause,” which was causing hot flashes. A month later, the influencer claimed she was losing her memory due to the cancer treatment.
The last thing Katie needs as she fights this battle is people making up malicious rumors that she’s passed away.
The Bachelorette Season 22 will premiere on ABC in 2026. Past seasons are available to stream on Hulu.
