Mariah Carey has opened up about the alleged rivalry between her and Whitney Houston. The pair were compared to one another for years, with fans often debating who was the bigger star. In an appearance on WWHL earlier this week, the singer explained how she really felt about the late singer.
Mariah Carey enjoyed “hilarious” Whitney Houston when they first met
Mariah dropped by the Watch What Happens Live set on October 1. Host Andy Cohen had a number of juicy questions for her, including how she really felt about fellow musician Whitney Houston.
At one point during the interview, Andy asks Mariah if she previously saw Whitney as her “biggest competition.” He points out that they both “belted” their songs and had “so many hits at the same time.”
Mariah replied that the intense “rivalry” between them was actually just a product of public perception. She said: “Well, it was the people that put us to hate each other … kind of pitted us against each other.”
She said that, in reality, the pair “had fun” when they finally met. She also mentioned the collab they did on the song When You Believe for the Prince of Egypt movie.
Mariah concluded: “She was hilarious, and I just went with her lead.”
The Hero singer also commented on her infamous dig at Jennifer Lopez. In 2003, she replied to a reporter’s question about Jen saying, “I don’t know her.”
She said of the comment: “The thing is, I was being honest when I said it. So I don’t know how it became so big. Honesty isn’t really something that becomes big most of the time.”
When Andy asked: “To clarify, you still do not know her right?”, Mariah replied, sighing, “How could I suddenly know [her], you know?”
The singer also dished on how much money All I Want for Christmas is You has netted her.
