Taylor Swift Explains Supposed Charli XCX Diss Track Actually Romantic

Actually, it’s not all romantic between Taylor Swift and Charli XCX. Following the release of The Life of a Showgirl, Taylor commented on the lyrics that fans think throw shade on the Brat creator.

Speaking on a special edition of the album, in which she explains each track in detail, Taylor said Actually Romantic is really about living “rent-free” in someone else’s head.

Pretty much everyone, everywhere listened to Taylor’s new album today. And fans think one of the songs is a diss to Charli XCX, who apparently dissed Taylor first on her 2024 track, Sympathy is a Knife. In it, Charli referenced being around a big musician who made her feel insecure about her success.

At the time, Charli said, “People are going to think what they want to think. That song is about me and my feelings and my anxiety.”

Fast forward to today, and fans are again theorising that there’s drama between the two, and it’s all to do with Actually Romantic’s lyrics: “I heard you call me ‘Boring Barbie’ when the coke’s got you brave / High-fived my ex and then said you’re glad he ghosted me / Wrote me a song saying it makes you sick to see my face / Some people might be offended / But it’s actually sweet / All the time you’ve spent on me.

So, is the song actually about Charli? Taylor’s thoughts are open for interpretation. “[It’s] a song about realising that someone else has kind of had a one-sided, adversarial relationship with you that you didn’t know about,” she said. “All of a sudden, they start doing too much and they start letting you know that actually, you’ve been living in their head rent-free and you had no idea.”

“It’s presenting itself as them sort of resenting you or having a problem with you, but you take that and just accept it as love,” she went on. “It’s actually pretty romantic if you really think about it.”
