George Michael Estate ‘Delighted’ About Taylor Swift’s Father Figure Song on New Album

Taylor Swift’s homage to a George Michael classic has the seal of approval from the late singer’s family and friends.

The fourth song on Taylor’s new album, The Life of a Showgirl, called Father Figure was originally released by the Wham singer in 1987.

George’s loved ones were more than happy to let Taylor remake the song. The original track alludes to the Wham singer’s life as a gay man, something he didn’t share at that time. It was the first song on George’s debut solo album, Faith.

Over 30 years since the song first came out, George Michael’s family and friends are happy to hear it again with a new voice.

They say they didn’t hesitate in agreeing to allow Taylor redo it. “We were delighted when Taylor Swift and her team approached us earlier this year about incorporating an interpolation of George Michael’s classic song Father Figure” the singer’s estate said on Instagram.

While Taylor and George never met, the 13-year partner of the late Careless Whisper singer believes the two of them would’ve gotten along famously. Kenny Goss believes both singers would have bonded over the appreciation for each other’s careers and artistry.

George’s version of Father Figure is sung from the perspective of someone wanting to be a preacher and a teacher. Taylor’s version is slightly altered, it appears. She seems to sing it from the perspective of a mentor in the music industry who is taking care of their protégé.

Taylor’s song contains several hidden Easter eggs including the line “They don’t make loyalty like they used to.” That is a phrase fans decoded among the tracks from her Reputation album earlier this week. It’s one of the many interesting songs you can hear. The album also has a shoutout to 50 Cent on the track Ruin the Friendship.

The Life of a Showgirl was officially released on October 3.
