However, it seems like there’s more to this best-kept secret. A source recently claimed that information about a passageway linking St. James’ Palace to the Stafford London Hotel has become common knowledge, concerning the royals.

Buckingham Palace insiders have reportedly been furious after a secret about a private underground tunnel came to light. Rob Shuter learned that the palace has been in utter chaos because information about the underground passageway connecting St. James’ Palace to the popular royal and celebrity hotspot, the Stafford London Hotel.

The report mentioned that not many knew about the 113-year-old tunnel. Rumor has it that Queen Elizabeth II and the Queen Mother once used it to sneak away from the cameras for lunches. Now, the well-kept secret is out, and a source claimed that “senior courtiers are livid.” The very existence of the tunnel had been classified information and was seemingly “never meant for public knowledge.”

Despite one of Buckingham Palace’s biggest secrets being out of the bag, the tunnel reportedly remains sealed today. In fact, it accommodates the five-star hotel’s 17th-century wine cellar, holding 8,000 rare bottles. Moreover, the passageway often hosts exclusive and intimate dinners for select VIP guests. A staffer shared that it is the “one place you can sip Bordeaux and still feel the crown above you.”

Page Six published a detailed report on the tunnel, sharing its purpose before being transformed into a wine cellar. It was used as an air raid shelter during World War II. The hotel functioned as a club for American and Canadian officers back in the day.
