Keanu Reeves does not appear to be very enthusiastic about AI-generated videos of himself. He guested on the Today show on Tuesday to discuss his new Broadway show, Waiting for Godot, alongside Alex Winter. When Melvin quizzed the 61-year-old about the rampant use of AI in the industry, he commented, “We’re in that world… It’s not a lot of fun.”
Keanu Reeves talks about circulating AI videos
Keanu Reeves expressed his concerns about AI videos and images of him and his long-time girlfriend, Alexandra Grant. Craig Melvin broached the topic, reminding Reeves that AI visuals of him and his girlfriend circulated online sometime back.
The host revealed that the pictures and videos spread like wildfire. It also prompted Grant to issue a statement denying that she got married to Reeves. The actor confessed that he had not seen the AI-generated pictures and videos until someone from the Today Show team showed them to him. “I knew what was going on, but I had never seen it,” the 61-year-old revealed.
“I think that’s happening to a lot of people,” he remarked, to which Melvin asked, “How concerning is that for you?” Reeves confessed, “We are in that world… it’s not a lot of fun. It’s like, ‘Hey, are you really selling this product?’ No!”
The Matrix star has been vocal about his stance against AI and has also included a clause in his contract to protect himself from the technology. In an interview with Wired, Reeves revealed, “I don’t mind if someone takes a blink out during an edit. But early on, in the early 2000s, or it might have been the ’90s, I had a performance change. They added a tear to my face, and I was just like, ‘Huh?!’ It was like, ‘I don’t even have to be here.’”
Furthermore, Reeves confessed that it is frustrating to lose agency as artists and individuals, as one has no participation in that. “If you go into deepfake land, it has none of your points of view. That’s scary,” he revealed in the same interview.
Keanu Reeves and Alex Winter’s Broadway show Waiting for Godot premiered on September 28. It will have a limited run through January 4, 2026.
