Sex and the City alum Ron Livingston starred as Jack Berger on the show. His character became one of the most loathed love interests after he broke up with Carrie via a post-it note. So, SATC fans probably won’t be thrilled to see the actor has defended his character’s behavior in a new interview. Still, hopefully there’ll be no shouting at Ron in the street this time.
Ron Livingston says today the Post-It breakup would be considered “chivalrous”
Ron recently spoke to E! News about that breakup note, which read “I’m sorry. I can’t. Don’t hate me.” The actor said the post-it was actually kind of chivalrous. He surmised: “Today, the Post-It note is a handwritten breakup note, which is very, very chivalrous. Today, people just ghost each other or send a text.”
The fictional breakup definitely stirred up a lot of passionate responses from viewers. Ron’s wife Rosemarie DeWitt revealed how he would be harassed by fans in the street. Speaking to Drew Barrymore last year, the actress said: “Back in the day, when we first started dating, we’d be walking in the West Village, and there’d be those Sex and the City tours, and Ron would be like, ‘Go left! Go left!’”
She continued: “We’d have to duck into Magnolia Bakery or something because women would come up and scream at him. They’d be like, ‘You broke up with her on a Post-it!’ You know what I mean? So he really got a lot of heat for a long time.”
It’s probably wise that Berger wasn’t among the exes brought back for And Just Like That, then. To be fair, as the actor points out, there wasn’t much for writers to play with. He told E! News: “I don’t know what you’d do with it. I thought it ended kind of so perfectly.”
