On October 6, Taylor Swift spoke to fans about her latest album, “The Life of a Showgirl”, during her appearance on SiriusXM’s “The Morning Mash Up”. In the interview, she reflected on her new release and spoke of her mom, Andrea Smith’s, thoughts about the rather innuendo-laden track “Wood”. Swift recounted by saying, “I believe she thinks the song touches on common superstitions and not Travis Kelce’s manhood.”
Taylor Swift jokes about her mom thinking ‘Wood’ is about superstitions
Andrea Swift and Taylor Swift share a very close bond. However, Taylor recently told listeners on “The Morning Mash Up” that her mom had a few comments regarding “Wood,” a song on the new album “The Life of a Showgirl”. The most memorable line from the song was “Knock on wood.” While host Nicole Ryan was saying Andrea’s POV was “so sweet,” the singer was easily able to explain it by saying, “That’s the appeal of the implied meanings which are not explicitly stated in a song.”
The “Trouble” hitmaker explained in “The Morning Mash Up” that her mother’s reaction was more humorous than judgmental, noting that Andrea often picks up on lyrical nuances that fans might miss. She added that her mom’s feedback always comes from a place of love and curiosity, mainly when songs include playful or layered meanings that invite multiple interpretations and spark conversation.
Throughout the song “Wood,” Swift incorporates lyrics that have strong suggestive undertones, including “Redwood tree” and “New heights of manhood.” Here, the artist thinks her mom is unaware that “New Heights” is the title of the Kelce brothers’ sports podcast, hosted by retired football player Jason Kelce alongside his brother, Travis Kelce.
All in all, Swift was able to clarify her mother’s confusion during the SiriusXM show. She said, “You could perform that song for an audience, and people might not even notice what’s going on. In that song, you perceive whatever you want.”
