Channing Tatum Talks Gambit in Avengers: Doomsday and Cajun Accent ‘Negotiation’

Reprising a character you’ve previously portrayed is not as seamless a transition as one may think.

At least that’s what Channing Tatum experienced during filming for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film. In the Marvel movie, the Magic Mike star plays Gambit, the same role he portrayed a year ago in Deadpool & Wolverine. Getting the proper accent for his character this time around was a tricky process. “It’s always an interesting negotiation,” said Channing about his dialect. Gambit has a Louisiana twang, but how Cajun he should sound this time around was something Channing struggled with.

Stepping right back into the role of Gambit took some time for Channing. Finding the perfect accent that fit the role this time around was a real tug of war for him. “It’s always a bit of a push and pull,” Channing mentioned about the dialect to People.

A part of the struggle may stem from the fact that the upcoming Avengers film has many more serious situations than Deadpool & Wolverine. Thus, Channing didn’t want to veer too much towards having a comedic voice.

Channing also has a lot to live up to after his performance as Gambit last year. “Gambit is a guy Chan was born to play,” according to his Deadpool & Wolverine co-star and writer Ryan Reynolds. The movie was nominated for a Golden Globe for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement, collecting over $1 billion in ticket sales at theatres.

Finding the proper accent seems to pale in comparison with what Channing had to do in his new movie Roofman. On The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon recently he discussed a naked scene he did which went a little off the rails.

The upcoming Avengers flick features an all-star cast with Channing, alongside Robert Downey Jr., Sir Ian McKellen, Chris Hemsworth, Paul Rudd, and Kelsey Grammer, to name a few.

The superhero movie will be released in theatres across the United States in December 2026.
