Demi Moore Says Menopause Makes Women Desexualize Themselves

Demi Moore is redefining the norms around menopause, resisting the idea that women should change how they look as they grow older. In a new cover story, Moore talked about her hair. The 62-year-old said that she kept her hair long through motherhood and menopause because it felt right to her. Moreover, she questioned the rules that tell women to shrink themselves.

Demi Moore tells Glamour she saw women chopping their hair off as they aged

In Glamour’s cover story, Demi Moore noted how women cut their hair short during menopause. This, according to the actor, seems to strip away their sexuality — and she wants to challenge that pressure.

Moore addressed the common message about length and age. She explained, “[We often hear] that as women get older, they shouldn’t have long hair,” stating that she did not buy that idea, because “it didn’t make sense” to her.

The Academy Award nominee continued, “I did notice, particularly women who were going through menopause, that they were…I was looking around and seeing they all were kind of cutting their hair in a very almost masculine way, just desexualizing themselves.”

Moore told Glamour she started growing her hair long after shaving her head for “G.I. Jane” in 1997 and stepping back from work to be with her children. She said she let it grow and kept it low-maintenance, because “I’m also lazy and I don’t like to sit in the chair or have to go and get it done a lot.”

Besides beauty choices, the Golden Globe winner said this moment in her life is about self-worth and staying open to learning from other women.

Demi Moore’s message is simple in the end: aging and menopause should not force women into a narrow look. Her view is that long or short hair is a personal choice, and by keeping her hair the way she likes it, she says she is rejecting pressure and reminding women that they can decide how they want to feel at every stage of life.
