Lady Sarah McCorquodale, Prince William and Prince Harry’s aunt and the eldest sister of the late Princess Diana, is recovering after a serious horse-riding accident. Known for her strong personality and close bond with her royal nephews, Lady Sarah has always been a steady and private presence in the Spencer family.
Sarah and Diana’s brother, Charles Spencer, recently revealed that she suffered a “really bad” fall while riding last month and has spent weeks in the hospital recovering from her injuries.

Speaking on the Rosebud with Gyles Brandreth podcast, Charles said his 70-year-old sister is still in recovery.
“She’s still riding, and she’s had a really bad fall last month and has been in hospital for a long time,” he explained. Charles said the family continues to support her during recovery. Her determination to walk again has deeply impressed those closest to her.
Charles shared that Sarah’s lively nature hasn’t faded, even during her hospital stay. “I think, [she] was quite a handful as a patient, because the lead doctor said to my brother-in-law, ‘She’s quite a character isn’t she?’” he said, referring to her husband, Neil McCorquodale. “Which I think is code for, ‘Could you take her home?’”
A friend told PEOPLE that Lady Sarah “is on the mend.” The update brought relief to those worried about her recovery. Charles, the 9th Earl Spencer, also reflected on their childhood and his sister’s spirited personality. “She was quite punchy,” he said, recalling how she once “rode her horse into the hall” during an argument with their father. She refused to leave. “It was a brilliant gesture because what are you going to do with that?”
Lady Sarah has stayed close to both William and Harry through the years. In 2024, she joined Prince William at RAF Cranwell, where he honored new flight school graduates. The outing was one of her rare public appearances and showed the strong bond they still share.
She helped plan the Princess Diana statue at Kensington Palace. William and Harry later unveiled it in 2021 on their mother’s 60th birthday.
Princess Diana tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997. Her family continues to honor her memory through their work and devotion. Lady Sarah’s accident has reminded many of the Spencers’ resilience and close family ties. As she recovers, she remains a cherished sister, aunt, and a living link between Diana’s legacy and her sons.
