Colin Farrell shares story on how he made Tom Cruise upset
Colin Farrell revealed that Tom Cruise “was not happy” with him during the filming of Minority Report.
Speaking on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on October 29, the 49-year-old actor recalled one of his “worst days” on a film set after showing up hungover for work. He said he had gone out the night before to celebrate his birthday and overslept his 6 a.m. call time for the $120 million production directed by Steven Spielberg.
Farrell told host Stephen Colbert, “It was my birthday on May 31, and we were shooting. I begged production… if they [could] not have me working on my birthday.” He explained that he woke up late after getting up to “all sorts of nonsense the night before,” then arrived at the set where assistant director David H. Venghaus Jr. told him he couldn’t work in that condition. Farrell replied, “Just get me six Pacifico cervezas and a packet of 20 Marlboro Reds.”
The actor admitted to drinking “a couple of beers” before filming a dialogue-heavy scene with Cruise. “It was terrible,” Farrell said, recalling that he couldn’t deliver one line — “I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology” — despite repeated attempts. “We did 46 takes,” he said. “Tom wasn’t very happy with me. Tom, who I love, was not very happy.”
Farrell said he was struggling with alcoholism at the time and later went to rehab two years after the incident. In Minority Report, he played Danny Witwer, a Justice Department agent auditing a futuristic crime-prevention program led by Cruise’s character, Chief John Anderton. The film grossed $358 million worldwide and became one of Farrell’s breakout roles.
