Love Island USA Star Huda Mustafa Apologizes to Olandria Carthen After N-Word Controversy

Huda Mustafa of Love Island USA is in the hot seat with her boyfriend Louis Russell. She’s apologizing to fellow Love Island contestant Olandria Carthen for seeming to laugh on a live stream after an unknown caller used the N-word in seeming reference to Olandria. Huda shared her side of the story and said sorry to her former castmate for her initial reaction.

This isn’t the first time Love Island has had issues with racism. Contestants have been removed due to the use of racial slurs and derogatory language in the past. While she claimed to have meant no harm, Huda should have realized the gravity of the inappropriate language.

Olandria called the language “unacceptable” in a statement she shared on her Instagram stories. She said that she does not condone racism in any way, shape, or form. She added that it was never okay, “not in anger, not as a joke, not ever.”

Huda also took to social media to apologize to Olandria along with her boyfriend Louis. She publicly apologized to Olandria and said she took the time to reflect and collect her thoughts before replying to ensure she didn’t come across as disingenuous. She apologized for failing to take full accountability for her actions.

“I want to begin by saying I completely respect Olandira, and it’s extremely disheartening that anyone would find it excusable to use this type of language,” Huda wrote. “Doing so only underlines that ignorance of the gravity that such a word carries.”

She added, “Olandria, it is clear now that this comment was targeted at you, and I apologize for my immediate reaction. My reaction in the moment came from being caught off guard, not from finding the word or situation funny. I want to be clear that I do not condone or tolerate anyone who uses such language.”

Additional Love Island stars shared their thoughts too, including Hannah Fields, Chelley Bissainthe, and Iris Kendall. Chelley said that Huda should have clocked it in the moment. This isn’t the first time Huda has done something controversial. She’s certainly raised eyebrows during Love Island, and people still can’t forget her viral Mamacita moment.

For now, she’s apologizing and doing some damage control. Like Olandria, Huda said she would also make a personal donation to the NAACP and encouraged her followers to do the same.

Love Island USA is available to stream on peacock.
